In my home, we have been wondering how we might control the internet usage, with our daughter growing older. We wanted to use a device like this as a way to ensure internet usage, chores and behavior were in check.
The setup process was very easy to do: create your account and pair the device. The walk through instructions were great, simple and easy to understand. Having the ability to create profiles is a nice feature, so we can split profiles between family members. It is also simple to set up a profile quickly for a friend just visiting.
KoalaSafe gives the ability to drill down into different categories that can be set as “blocked” or “allowed”. Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites can be set to “blocked” yet leaving Musicly “allowed”. The array of categories and subcategories that KoalaSafe has created is a huge time saver. They have done most of the leg work within this part of the device. You can also create your own blocked sites which is very helpful for up and coming social media sites that we as parents don’t even know about yet.
The schedule feature is very easy to use, just select block times or allowed times. So If you want a profile user to be unable to connect to the internet from 9:00 pm to 5:00am Monday-Thursday, it can be set that way, by just selecting that time frame in the app.
The last feature I will talk about is the “Usage” section in the app, this is great for seeing just how long Each profile user has been on a particular site. You can have a high level over view of browsing activity for the last 7 days. You can see that they were on YouTube for 3 hours on Tuesday, National Geographic researching a paper for 38 minutes, or shopping Amazon for 49 minutes on Thursday.
Overall the device is a great addition to modern parenting. We will be using KoalaSafe for years to come.
