Easy Apple Crisp Recipe

Baking for my family is something I love to do, and when FALL rolls around I get all excited! I usually can’t wait to fill my kitchen with the scents of apples, spices, pumpkin, nuts and more! But see the thing with Apple Crisp is you don’t have to wait for fall, you can make it any time of the year. So this past weekend I pulled out my favorite recipe to make …APPLE CRISP!

Apple Crisp goes way back for me, my grandma showed me how to make it, and it is her recipe I use every time I make it. Now I tweak the recipe a little bit, but it is worth it! This is one of those recipes that I make time and time again and my family loves it!

One of my favorite parts of the apple crisp is the topping. I love the addition of oats and cinnamon for a topping that’s yummy, and the topping/crust lover in me has a tremendous appreciation for the ratio of topping to filling. It is the perfect balance to the warm apple filling.

MAKING THE APPLE CRISP

Topping:

1 1/4 cups flour

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

12 tablespoons butter (1 1/2 sticks), chilled and cut into small pieces

Filling ingredients:

3 lbs of good cooking apples such as Granny Smith.

2 Tbsp lemon juice

4 Tbsp butter

1/2 cup sugar

1 Tbsp flour

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Pour the apple mixture into a buttered 2-quart baking dish and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. With a food processor, a pastry blender, or your fingers work the butter into the flour mixture just until it comes together and large clumps form.

Sprinkle the topping evenly over the fruit. Bake the apple crisp until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown and crisp about 45 minutes.

All that’s left is to top the warm apple crisp with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream and you have the absolutely perfect dessert.  This warm Easy Apple Crisp will make your house smell wonderful as the buttery, oatmeal topping is baking over the apples, sugar, and cinnamon.
