In this book, Benji has decided that he wants to grow the world’s largest squash. He takes seeds he harvested the previous year, and plants them in the back of the garden.
Once he plants them he waters them and cares for them, but is disappointed when nothing happens right away. He really wants to show his daddy the squash he has planted. Then one day he sees the tiny sprouts pushing through the dirt. He now knows his hard work and patience is finally paying off.
Benji continues to care for his beloved squash plants. When the first one is ready to be picked, he harvests it and struggles to carry the giant squash back to his house. Daddy weighs it. Benji’s giant squash weighs TWENTY-FOUR POUNDS!! They take pictures, and then mom cooks it with butter and brown sugar, and they enjoy feasting on Benji’s hard work.
Teach Children Perseverance and Patience
Patience isn’t something we’re born with. It’s a learned behavior. I myself struggle with patience, as does my son. So this book was a perfect addition to his personal library. I also love to enforce perseverance because I don’t want my son giving up when life gets tough. He has had a lot of obstacles to overcome in his eleven years of life. I want him to know that he can work through them, and it will pay off in the end.
Benji and the 24 Pound Banana Squash by best-selling author Alan C. Fox is a fun way to help drive these qualities home. The illustrations by Eefje Kuijl are precious too. They’re colorful and fun. I like how they capture the feelings of Benji perfectly. It helps my son recognize feelings via facial expressions. (He’s autistic and sometimes knowing what expressions mean are hard for him.)
