We have all suffered the winter blues. When we finally reach the new year, we settle into the post-holiday season with a monotonous routine and a tiny, tiny glimmer of hope that Spring is only a couple of months down the road. As the kids fall back into school and we struggle to stay focused at work, that tiny glimmer can feel so far away. As we vow to break the monotony of the January through March season, let’s look at some options for getaways that can refresh the family and make the time go quickly.

Logan, Utah is nestled along some of the most breathtaking scenery in the U.S. With the picturesque mountains and the jaw-dropping canyons, sometimes we forget that our next adventures are staring us in the face. With this list, we can use the scenery to our advantage.

  • Take the winter activities to the hiking trails for a day getaway:

Snowmen in the front yard have nothing compared to building snowmen on a hiking trail and if there isn’t any snow to play with, bundle up and do a nature scavenger hunt! (Note: for more active families, try the Wind Caves trail)

  • Bundle up the kiddos and take the sleds down Old Main:

A much-loved tradition in its own right is sledding down Old Main. There’s nothing better than sledding than going for a round of hot chocolate.

  • Plan to spend the weekend up at Beaver Mountain:

Many families truly enjoy the driving up to Beaver Mountain and participating in winter sports like Skiing and Snowboarding. This lodge is extremely family friendly and welcomes participants of all experience levels. If you are new to Skiing or Snowboarding, the lessons are inclusive, fun, and cost-efficient. If you are a seasoned sportsperson, the variety of runs to appeal to everyone! (Note: free parking and the lodge allows you to bring packed lunches for the family)

Four hours west, Elko, Nevada continues the winter family fun. Just like Logan, you can use the scenery to your advantage in finding something to do.

  • Visit the Northeastern Nevada Museum and the California Trail Historic Interpretive Center:

For families who’d rather enjoy indoor attractions during the winter, the museums in Elko are a great place to start. The California Trail Center has the ability to incorporate a history lesson into your kids’ day of fun. Be sure to check out what programs they offer for the kids, as well! The Northwestern Nevada Museum is a gem hidden with the town. They boast an impressive collection of artifacts and artwork that can keep a family quite happy for hours!

  • Lamoille Canyon Snowmobiling and Skiing:

An increasingly popular activity for families is to spend the day snowmobiling! Bring your snowmobiles and jump on! If your family enjoys skiing, Lamoille Canyon’s breathtaking runs are not to miss. Spend the day enjoying all that Lamoille has to offer!

  • Sledding at Elko’s Snowbowl:

A cost-efficient way to spend hours of fun with the family. The kids will absolutely love sledding at the Snowbowl.

There are countless ways to enjoy the cold but, sometimes, it’s hard to remember in the middle of a never-ending winter. So whether the kids want to sled all day, ice skate, or ski down the slopes, there are a variety of options to choose from! If the budget allows, maybe even turn the getaways into a hotel stay! The idea of an indoor pool and hot chocolate in a hotel room is enough to break away from our routines and refresh the kids! Enjoy!
