Family First Every Day!
Let me tell you that doing this as a family instead of making it my husband‘s issue was the best thing we could have done. Of course, I had to get my feelings in check and step up for him. This is when the “In sickness and in health” part of our marriage vows come into play. I needed to be his support just like I know he would be mine.
We developed a PLAN and presented our ideas to the whole family, and the entire family was on board. We want Dad to be around for a long time, so since we caught this pretty early on, we can improve some of the daily bad habits and get this blood sugar under control.
At first, I can honestly say I nagged a lot; I would cringe every time I saw him look at the cake in the store or when we drive by his favorite greasy fast food place. I knew I had to take a different approach and do this plan with him, and yes it has done both of us a whole lot of good.
5 Ways To Maintain Blood Sugars:
1. Drink Water. You would think this would be common sense but drinking water has not been one of our favorite things to do, so yes this was a struggle. However after a couple of weeks of filling up that big glass seven times a day was just part of my routine now. Tips…use straws and fruit!
2. Exercise Daily. Yes, another common sense issue but this was also hard to do. I much rather sit on my couch watching TV then go for a walk, but this wasn’t going to work if we didn’t put in the effort. Nowadays, we go for a walk in the morning and after dinner. We made a workout room (ok corner) with items around the house for weights, yoga mat, and workout folder. Keeping track is our way of monitoring our progress and if it is helping my husband. Which it has, he has lost some weight, has more energy and keeping those blood sugars low.
3. Control Portions. This was a bit tricky but I made it work, and we haven’t looked back. Now what I did was started using smaller plates. I’m pretty sure my husband grew up in the era that you have to eat everything on your plate. I know I did, hated that too. Anyways, my husband noticed I change up the plate size and was quite worried he was going to starve. I told him to give it a try and if he were still hungry then we would get some more, but when he finished his plate, he passed on seconds.
4. Limit the STRESS! Stress is our middle name, something is always going on in our house. We have teens and relatives living with us, so yes stress is a significant factor. But we have been meditating (husband laughed at me when I suggested yoga) in the morning and before we go to bed.
5. Replace ONE MEAL with Glucerna. This was the smartest choice we made. Glucerna was specially designed for those managing their blood sugars. It has CARBSTEADY- unique blends of slow release carbohydrates that can help with blood sugar spikes.
Following these tips with my husband was hard but so worth it in the long run.
Glucerna
Glucerna has been a lifesaver for us; it helps manage our sugar cravings and our hunger. Replacing a meal with Glucerna is something you can feel good about and it tastes so yummy, so basically, this is a win-win all around.
For example for breakfast my husband used to eat a muffin probably four times a week, well that muffin has 380 calories and 53 grams of carbs. But the Glucerna drink has 180 calories and only 16 g of carbs. Do you see why this was a smart choice?
Plus I don’t have to special order this drink; I can go to my local Walmart and grab up as many bottles I can within my budget. So convenient and not out of the way since Walmart is our go-to store for pretty much everything!
