Are you considering taking up angling?  It can be a fun and rewarding hobby the whole family can enjoy, but to do it well you’re going to need some gear.  The trouble is, shopping for fishing gear can be extremely daunting to the uninitiated.  This article will help novice anglers get off on the right foot when it comes to gathering the right gear.

The first thing you’re going to need is rod.  It’s a good idea for novice anglers to start with float angling, which is typically considered to be the easiest method.  To do that, you are going to need a match and coarse angling rod and reel.  From there, stock your tackle box with some hooks, floats and shot weight.  For best results it’s always a good idea to also ensure that you are shopping at a reputable fishing supply store.  Not only will they have a good selection of products that are aimed at novice anglers, the staff has the knowledge and experience to be able to ensure you are fully geared up before you head out to the lake.

When it comes to learning technique, there are many different options out there.  One of the best ideas is one that you can do from your own home: watching videos!  There is a wealth of online fishing instruction videos that can show you everything from how to bait your hook to how to cast, which baits you need to use, etc.  Check out videos on YouTube and other video services from reputable pro anglers for the best advice and best angling rod.

The next important thing novice anglers need to know is where to go to have a successful catch.  The Internet is a valuable resource here, too, offering a variety of sites that outline the best places in your region for novices to go fishing such as the Naples Fishing Report.  Not all lakes and rivers are created equal!  Some feature currents and other obstacles that make catching fish more challenging for a newcomer.  There are lots of places to go that offer “ticket fishing” where you are almost guaranteed to catch something, which is great for young anglers and newcomers of all ages for honing their skills and boosting their confidence.

When it comes to fishing, timing and patience are two of the best tools in an angler’s tackle box.  Fishing is not something you can rush, that’s certainly true, but there is another way in which timing comes into the equation.  For best results and a more relaxing fishing experience, it’s best to head to the lake first thing in the morning, before the sun is even up.  This is particularly true if you are heading out to a popular fishing hole because as the day progresses the crowds will thicken, making it more challenging to catch the fish even if they are biting. Also make sure you have good bait or maybe Fish A Chatterbait. There are different colors to pick from and you need to make sure you pick the right color.

Two final bits of advice for a novice angler:  check the weather and bring a camera!  Nothing spoils the excitement of one’s first fishing trip like being unprepared for the weather.  And you’ll want to capture your first catch on camera so you have bragging rights when you get home! Here’s what we think are the top ultralight spinning reel.
