Why You Should Never Skip The VIN Check

If you buy a used ATV, then you need to check the VIN code indicated in the documents of the vehicle with the one stamped on the body of the very same automobile.

With it, you can find out the condition of the car, its mileage, information about the previous owners, etc.

Besides that, the ATV VIN check will tell you whether a vehicle was in an accident, under arrest, or even stolen.

Checking the history in this way will help you not to buy a vehicle with a criminal history and get exactly what you are paying for.

Why You Should Never Skip The VIN Check

What Is a VIN Code?

VIN is the biography of the car displayed in 17 characters (it can be numbers and letters of the Latin alphabet).

You can find this code on the components of the body of the vehicle or chassis, as well as on specially made number plates (nameplates).

The code consists of three parts:

  • Worldwide manufacturer’s index (geographical area – country – a specific manufacturer, sometimes vehicle type);
  • Descriptive part (car model, engine, equipment, and a control sign);
  • Distinctive part (model year of the vehicle, manufacturer, etc.).

During the check, you should remember that the first part of the VIN code is a WMI sign.

It is a World Manufacturers Identification – symbols containing information about the manufacturer.

After that, six characters of VDS come. The Vehicle Description Section displays the information about the vehicle.

In many models, the last digit usually serves as a control, a kind of protection against illegal interruption.

So, you should keep it in mind. And the very final part is represented by eight VIS characters.

It is a Vehicle Identification Section containing additional data about the vehicle, for example, about the factory where the ATV was made or about the year of its manufacture.

  • Avoid the risk of car theft or pledge;
  • Determine if the car was involved in an accident;
  • Find out if the car has any “improvements” made by previous owners;
  • Find spare parts specifically for your vehicle.

How to Check the VIN Code?
