Vaping: It’s Not Just for Hipsters Anymore!

Guest post by Triple 7 Vaping.

Do you smoke? If you do, don’t be ashamed. Despite continually declining smoking rates, tens of millions of American adults still use cigarettes. Smoking is an addiction that affects people of all genders, races and income levels – and quitting, as you already know, is very, very difficult.

E-cigarettes first appeared in the United States a little over 10 years ago. Millions of people around the world now vape, and virtually every community has at least one local vape shop. At this point, it’s extremely unlikely that you haven’t at least heard of vaping in passing. For whatever reason, though, you’ve decided that it isn’t for you. Maybe you tried a first-generation e-cigarette and didn’t find it satisfying enough – or maybe you were unfortunate enough to enter a local vape shop and find it stuffed with a crowd of cloud-blowing hipsters.

Maybe you even met this guy.

If an initial bad experience turned you off from giving vaping an honest chance, this article is for you. The vaping industry has changed greatly over the past several years. Vaping equipment, like the Lost Mary BM600, works better than ever, and e-liquids are more satisfying than ever. You don’t have to be a gadget fanatic to enjoy vaping, and you definitely don’t have to be a hipster. Just like smoking, vaping is something that appeals to all types of people. In this article, we’re going to explain some of the ways in which the vaping industry has changed over the past several years.

How Has Vaping Equipment Changed?

If you first tried an e-cigarette several years ago, it probably looked something like this one.

To use one of these early e-cigarettes, you’d push a plastic cartridge over the atomizer portion of your e-cigarette. E-liquid – held in a wet sponge inside the cartridge – would seep down a stainless steel bridge in the atomizer and eventually reach the atomizer’s heating coil. You’d puff on the e-cigarette – or hold an activation button – and the heating coil would vaporize the e-liquid. At least, that’s how early e-cigarettes were supposed to work. In reality, only the people who were most committed to switching to vaping could actually weather the transition. Early e-cigarettes were unreliable. They leaked. The sponges stuck to the atomizers and melted. The batteries didn’t last long enough. The worst part was that early e-cigarettes simply didn’t generate enough vapor to satisfy committed smokers.

This is an example of a modern vaping device geared toward beginners.

This device doesn’t look at all like the old style of e-cigarette, does it? Vaping product manufacturers iterate their products several times each year, and vaping devices like this one represent dozens of generations of evolution. These are a few of the key ways in which this device differs from vintage e-cigarettes.

  • It’s a bit bigger. Most vaping product manufacturers no longer try to make e-cigarettes that look like real cigarettes. Instead, they focus on building devices with enough e-liquid storage and battery life to be useful in the real world.
  • It has a larger heating coil that generates significantly more vapor.
  • It stores its e-liquid in an enclosed pod that prevents leaking and uses gravity to keep the heating coil wet. Vaping products no longer use sponges.
  • You can refill it. A modern vaping device doesn’t restrict you to the five flavors available for your model of e-cigarette; you can fill your device with any e-liquid from any manufacturer. Many hundreds of different e-liquid flavors exist today.

How Has E-Liquid Changed?

The Flavors Are Better Than Ever

If you tried an e-cigarette several years ago and didn’t enjoy your experience, you may have found that the vapor tasted like perfume or chemicals. A Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik invented the modern e-cigarette. Chinese factories produce virtually all vaping devices, and for the first several years of the vaping industry’s existence, Chinese makers supplied most of the world’s e-liquid. After a while, though, domestic e-liquid makers began to appear. Many of those companies became very successful because they produced e-liquids that American vapers preferred over imported e-liquids. Today, there are dozens of American e-liquid brands with national distribution. You’ll find them online and in your local vape shops, and they’re available in every flavor that you can possibly imagine. If you tried an e-cigarette with a Chinese e-liquid in the past and wrote off vaping as not for you after your experience, you’ll be in for a major surprise when you explore the wide-ranging world of today’s domestic e-liquids.

Nicotine Salts Make Switching Easier for Heavy Smokers

Aside from the perfume-like flavors, the biggest problem with the e-liquids of the past was that they didn’t deliver nicotine efficiently enough to satisfy heavier smokers. In recent years, a new type of e-liquid has emerged. Nicotine salt e-liquid contains nicotine in its salt form. While most e-liquid contains freebase nicotine, nicotine salt e-liquid mimics the form of nicotine present in tobacco leaves. Nicotine salt e-liquid also typically uses higher nicotine concentrations than were available during the early years of the vaping industry. With nicotine salt e-liquid, it’s possible to achieve a blood-nicotine concentration similar to what you’d get from smoking a cigarette. Many people have reported that using nicotine salt e-liquid has made the transition from smoking to vaping much easier.

How Has the Vaping Community Changed?

Like smoking, vaping attracts people from all walks of life. It’s undeniable, though, that certain types of people – perhaps people like the one pictured at the top of this article – have become the public faces of vaping in a way. You’ll see them hanging out at the local vapor lounges and taking part in cloud competitions. For them, vaping has become a serious hobby and obsession. If you think that vaping isn’t for you because you can’t identify with the hobbyist crowd, though, think again. In the United States alone, an estimated 9 million people vape regularly. They’re not all sitting in the local vapor lounges. They’re young professionals and grandmas – and everything in between. The people who use online vaping forums or work at local vape shops are much more varied and welcoming than you might realize. There is no reason in 2018 for anyone to smoke. If you’ve concluded based on a past experience that vaping isn’t for you, it’s time to reconsider your decision and give e-cigarettes another chance.
