Basic Definition of Online Trading

Online trading is the practice of buying and selling currencies, metal commodities such as gold or silver, commodity futures contracts such as oil or coffee beans, stock index futures, or stocks using online platforms.

People who buy and sell these things are called traders not investors because they do not hold onto the products’ long-term for income purposes but instead treat them like stocks where they only keep the positions open for a day, a few days, or at most a week.

Online trading became more popular as technology advanced and the world wide web developed because it allowed people to trade from anywhere that they could access the internet.

History of Online Trading

The first online stockbroker was Charles Holt after he started his business in 1962 selling shares of Florida real estate companies; however Online trading really began gaining attention and popularity in 1980 with the creation of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE).

The CBOE created the first market for options trading where people could buy calls and put options on publicly traded companies such as McDonald’s.

Online futures contracts were developed shortly after Online Trading became popular by exchanges such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and these soon expanded into currency Online Trading and Online trading in metals and commodities which became popular for Online Trading because these markets were more volatile, leading to potentially larger profits.

Online Trading was becoming increasingly popular by the 1990s and 2000s and this led to a large number of Online Trading companies emerging on the scene that were either new startups or divisions of major banks; however, most of them did not last very long until they were forced out of business due to security problems with their Online trading platforms.

In 2008 after the financial crisis started many Online trading brokerage firms left the market due to lack of profitability, but two years later Online Trading was starting to pick up again as investors realised it can be profitable if they knew what they were doing.
