Who Needs a Testosterone Test?

T-hormone in men is responsible for sperm production, sex drive, and muscle growth. With age or due to certain diseases, it can fall. Here are symptoms of low T and reasons why a doctor may prescribe an examination:

  • decreased libido
  • unstable erection
  • inability to conceive
  • muscle loss
  • breast enlargement
  • bone fragility
  • problems with the thyroid gland
  • hair loss
  • testicular diseases

How to Check Testosterone Levels

A T-test is an ordinary blood test. The doctor may advise you to check testosterone levels in the morning between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. You may have to come to the lab on an empty stomach to make the results as meaningful as possible.

The procedure is standard: the doctor disinfects the elbow bend, uses a needle to draw blood from the vein into a special vial, and covers the injection with a plaster. This takes at most 3–7 minutes.

Testosterone Blood Test Results Explained

The testosterone testing lab will give you the results of the test within a few days. The expected value for men ranges from 270 to 1070 ng/dL.

T-levels can decrease due to liver and kidney disease, benign tumors, testicular injuries, pituitary malfunction, etc. Sometimes, these results are related to age (the older a man is, the lower his T) or to taking certain medications.

The opposite problem, a rise in T, can occur due to adrenal disease, a tumor in the testicles, or steroid use.

Remember that the values above are only the reference ones. Only a doctor can explain what your results mean to you specifically.
