So you’re thinking of installing a flag to show your support for the United States and all the great people that make the nation what it is?
That’s wonderful news!
But before installing a flagpole in your garden, there are a number of things you need to consider and be aware of.
Size and Height
The first thing you need to decide before installing a flagpole in your garden or outdoor space is the size and height of the flagpole.
This will be dependant on whereabouts in your garden you want to put it.
Many Americans choose to put their flagpoles in front of their houses in the front gardens so that many people can see it when they go past their house.
Wherever you decide to put your flagpole is up to you and what you think works best for your garden.
However, remember that you want to have your flagpole on show, so don’t put it behind plants, trees, or buildings that might draw attention away from it.
The height and size of your flagpole should be proportionate to your house.
You don’t want to have a really large or tall flagpole if you have a small one-story house.
Similarly, you don’t want a really small flagpole if you have a large house. The ideal residential flagpole height is between 20 and 25 feet.
Flagpole Material
The next thing you need to think about is the flagpole material that’s right for you and your garden.
Most people choose flagpoles that are made from aluminum or fiberglass because the materials are durable and sturdy.
Fiberglass often looks smarter and is scratch-resistant.
Fiberglass is also better for tolerating high winds and stormy weather.
Whereas aluminum is a good sturdy material that doesn’t require much maintenance or upkeep once it’s erected.
Type of Flagpole
Another thing to consider is the type of pole you want to have in your garden.
The two options are single piece flagpoles or telescoping flagpoles.
A single piece flagpole is considered to be more traditional as it uses the halyard system to raise and lower the flag.
The halyard system is where a rope runs through a pulley system at the top of the pole and is attached to the flag to it.
One disadvantage of this type of flagpole is that it can be noisy when the wind makes the swivel snaps (that connect the flag) hit against the pole.
Another problem with the single piece flagpole is that it needs to be maintained, which can be expensive.
While the telescoping flagpole is considered easier to get your flag up because all you need to do is raise and lower the flag with the telescoping mechanisms.
Unlike the single piece flagpole, the telescopic pole’s flag is attached with a swivel ring and a spring clip system, which means it won’t clang against the pole.
Another reason people favor the telescoping flagpole is that maintenance and repairs are easier and cheaper.
How Much Does a Flagpole Cost?
When looking into flagpole pricing you’ll be pleasantly surprised to hear that the average cost is $500 for those who want to do it themselves.
Flagpole installation, when done by yourself, can take up to a day to fix into the ground.
You can buy a flagpole kit, which includes the flagpole, an installation guide, a ball top, an American flag, and attachments such as swivel rings.
However, what doesn’t come with most flagpole kits is a concrete mix, so you’ll need to add this cost on too.
If you don’t have a shovel, you’ll also need to fork out for one of these too.
Meanwhile, if you don’t consider yourself to be much of a DIY enthusiast then you can hire a contractor to install it for you.
The average flagpole installation cost is $850, which covers the installation of the flagpole, the cost of labor, and the materials.

I found it interesting that you mentioned that it is important to not place your flagpole behind something that is going to obstruct the view of it. My father-in-law is wanting to have a flagpole installed in his front yard, but isn't sure the best place to put it. I will have to let him know that the empty spot near the front window should do great since there isn't anything obstructing the view there.
