Violated: Exposing Rape at Baylor University Amid College Footballs’s Sexual Assault Crisis -a New Book by ESPN reporter and author

Baylor University is the world’s largest Baptist University. It’s located in Waco Texas. This very Christian college condemned sexual relations before marriage. Consumption of alcohol on campus was grounds for being thrown out. Baylor didn’t even allow dancing on campus until 1996. But female students were being sexually assaulted. Any rate is alarming, however, at Baylor, it was getting out of control.

Administrators at Baylor were hiding this secret. They weren’t helping the victims. School officials were rarely even punishing the offenders. Why? Who could let this happen?

Violated

One Word

Football. The offenders were Baylor University football players. They were raping and sexually assaulting women. Sadly, these crimes were being covered up. University coach, athletic director, and even the school president were keeping this secret. They were discouraging those women from reporting these crimes. All in the name of their football program. Just two years ago, these crimes were brought to light. This past January a Federal lawsuit was filed. It alleges that at least thirty-one football players have committed at least fifty-two acts of rape. All over a period of four years. These range from sexual assault, rape, and even gang rape.

Paula and Mark tell the story of these crimes. They tell us how a university and its football program with national prominence, came crashing down around them. All from stories of woman, after woman, and their experiences. A college that put winning above the lives of their female students. A college that put a sport above all else. This new novel focuses on the sexual crimes committed at Baylor University. But sexual assault and rape is something that needs to be addressed everywhere. This shouldn’t be happening to our children.

Paula Lavigne is an ESPN investigative reporter. Mark Schlabach is a New York Time best-selling author. Well known for his works with the Duck Commander Family.
