Do you often feel like you are quite stressed and in need of a release?
We all need to find a way to let go and relax.
Though everyone does so in different ways, there are some common pointers that we can all follow when we are trying to learn how to do this for ourselves.
Know How to Do It in the Moment
Ever sat at work and you can just feel the tension in your body?
You need to notice what some of the warning signs for you might be so you can take a moment to chill out before things get even worse.
When we are stressed, we tend to tense up.

Holding this position for long periods of time can hurt us and leave us with an odd twinge in our neck or back.
If you recognise that you are a little too tense, literally take five minutes to ground yourself.
Try to unpin your shoulders and roll them a few times.
If your jaw is tight, loosen it, and just have a good stretch. Even if you are swamped with work, taking a few moments to calm down and destress means that you will be able to tackle the rest of your workload with renewed vigour.
Get Enough Sleep
You always need to make sure that you are getting enough sleep each night.
Sleep deprivation can lead to you feeling drained and sluggish, and this can only increase your stress and anxiety levels.
A good night’s sleep will be key in ensuring that you are able to deal with your stress more proactively.
If you find that it is difficult to switch off at night, you should think about establishing a bedtime routine. This will help to give your body certain cues that it is time for you to get some rest.
A bedtime routine could start in the hour or so before you go to sleep, or it could get started the moment that you walk in the door in the evening.
You need to set up the right routine for you. A good night’s sleep really can work wonders.
Have Some Phone-Free Time
Many of us feel tied to our smartphones in an unhealthy way.
Even if we are not sitting and scrolling through some social media feed, our phones are always close by.
If they go off, we instantly check to see what the notification might be.
This is not the healthiest of relationships, and it can often add to our stress levels. ”Therefore, it can often be good to schedule in some phone-free time.
This could be as simple as you just leaving your phone in one place as you go about your business at the weekend.
If you know that you want to have a peaceful evening in – maybe read or watch a film – leave your phone in another room. You might find it to be liberating.
The step above this would be to go on a digital detox break.
There are plenty of resorts and places to stay cropping up that promise no Wi-Fi and the chance to relax in beautiful settings.
Heading to one of these can be a great way for you to force yourself to stay off your phone. It will give you a moment to rebalance, reconnect, and destress.

Eat Properly
Most people go one of two ways when they are too stressed.
Either they will lose their appetite and only eat a few mouthfuls here and there, or they will eat too much and end up overeating.
Neither is a good path to follow, so you need to make sure that you are able to eat properly regardless of how stressed you are.
If you have to break things down into basics, do so. In a particularly stressful week, you might want to just eat mac and cheese for a week because it is simple and easy to make.
Do so, you can always get back on track with your diet when you are through your stressful patch!
One good tip to try might be to look into batch cooking. If you can find a load of recipes that you enjoy, you should prepare them in advance.
Pop them in the freezer and take them out one by one when you need them.
If you know that you are going to be too stressed out to cook, this can be a great way for you to still have a delicious homecooked meal – and you won’t have to pay for the expense of a takeaway!
Find a Form of Exercise You Like
Exercising can be a great way to destress.
It is also fantastic as there are many different varieties that you can try to find the one that is right for you.
Some might value something a little more high-impact, others might want something a little calmer.
Regardless, you need to make sure that you find a form of exercise that you enjoy.
For example, you might discover that you really like lifting weights. This is a great way for you to push yourself and channel your stress into something productive.
Many can often find lifting weights to be almost meditative as the sets and reps are very calming and repetitive – even when the weights are fairly heavy.
Others might prefer something calmer. Heading out for a walk or going for a swim are two such calmer activities that can deliver great results if you want them.
These allow you to switch off the busy part of your brain and concentrate on your surroundings.
Calms exercises such as these can be just as helpful and as destressing as high-impact ones.
Discover Another Outlet
In addition to exercising, you should try to find another outlet that will allow you to destress and calm down. Try to pick something that is very removed from your line of work.

It could be a creative outlet, or it might be something that allows you to just switch off and relax.
As an example, some might want to try to watch TV or a film when they are feeling stressed.
However, their mind is racing a little too fast, and this means that their fingers can become twitchy.
They might end up focusing more on their phone than on what they are watching.
Taking up a creative hobby like knitting will allow you to keep your hands and the more frantic parts of your mind busy when you might be trying to relax.
You could also try reading, or a jigsaw, or even some other sort of puzzle.
If you feel overly stressed, you should be able to find something that will distract your mind and give you a small outlet instead of focusing on what might be stressing you out.
Destressing can be difficult, but it is something that you need to learn how to do.
Even when you are trapped in a stressful period, you need to learn how to switch off and calm yourself down for the evening, even if you are going to be picking it all up again the next day.
