The Wrong E-Cigarette Can Ruin Your First Vaping Experience

Guest Post by Euro Vape.

If you are a smoker – and you’re considering making the switch to vaping – you have a major decision on your hands because your first e-cigarette or vaping device is most important one that you’ll ever buy.

You might wonder why that is the case. Aren’t all e-cigarettes pretty much the same? In fact, they’re not – and most of the vaping devices on the market are actually terrible for beginners.

First Vaping Experience

The Problems for First-Time E-Cigarette Buyers

Product Reviews May Not Be Entirely Honest

If you’ve read e-cigarette reviews online, you’ve probably noticed that just about all of them are positive. That’s because vaping product vendors and manufacturers compensate bloggers and video makers for their content – and few online content producers are going to reward an advertiser with a negative review. No matter what product you read about – even if it’s one that happens to be years out of date – most bloggers are going to tell you that it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Most Vape Shops Don’t Carry E-Cigarettes for Beginners

Visiting a local vape shop can be equally problematic because, as much as any vape shop owner would love to help convert a smoker to vaping, must vape shops simply don’t have the kinds of products that are best for beginners. No one wants to lose a sale, though, so you could easily encounter a situation in which you walk into a vape shop and walk out with a device intended for vapers with much more experience than you.

Mass-Market E-Cigarettes Are Deceptively Expensive

Visiting your local convenience store or gas station is a good way to find an e-cigarette that’s appropriate for beginners. If you buy one of those e-cigarettes, though, you’ll pay for it over the long term because mass-market e-cigarettes use expensive e-liquid cartridges or pods that you can’t fill yourself. The cartridges for mass-market e-cigarettes typically cost $2-3 each and often last less than a day. Using such an e-cigarette can easily cost more than smoking.

Why the Wrong E-Cigarette Can Ruin Your First Vaping Experience

So far, we’ve explained some of the problems you’re likely to encounter when you shop for your first e-cigarette at some common venues. Next, we’ll describe the type of vaping hardware that you’re likely to find at those venues and explain why that hardware isn’t the ideal choice as a first e-cigarette.

Advanced Vaping Devices Are Too Much, Too Soon

The average person who patronizes vape shops isn’t new to vaping and isn’t interested in vaping devices for beginners. Such a person is always on the hunt for what’s bigger, better and newer. As a result, stocking a selection of e-cigarettes for beginners would only be wasting shelf space for most vape shops. If you buy your first e-cigarette from a vape shop, you’re likely to walk out with a device sporting a huge e-liquid tank and a power range exceeding 100 watts. That’s great for an experienced vaper, but it isn’t the best hardware configuration for a first e-cigarette.

The problem with buying such a powerful device when you’re new to vaping is that when you use such a device, you don’t inhale in the same way as you would when smoking. When you smoke a cigarette, you draw the smoke into your mouth before inhaling it. The slightly restrictive draw of a cigarette supports that inhalation style. A high-power vaping device, on the other hand, has a much freer draw that enables it to produce very large vapor clouds. To use the vaping devices that you’ll find in most vape shops, you’ll inhale the vapor directly into your lungs. You’ll find it very difficult to get used to that if you’ve just switched from smoking to vaping.

Mass-Market E-Cigarettes Use Outdated Technology

Life is pretty good for companies that make razors. They can practically give the razors away because the real profit is in the blades. The same is true of most of the e-cigarettes that you’ll find in convenience stores. The starter kits may be cheap, but the refill cartridges cost up to $3 each. That price might sound good on the surface, but that’s only because most e-cigarette makers would have you believe that a single cartridge contains enough e-liquid for a day of vaping. In practice, that’s often untrue; people often end up going through multiple cartridges per day and spending far more money than they would if they had continued smoking. Vaping can – and should – be cheaper than smoking, but that won’t be the case if you use a mass-market e-cigarette.

The second major problem with mass-market e-cigarettes is that their cartridges aren’t refillable or interchangeable. Not only will you pay too much for your cartridges, but you’ll also be stuck with the small handful of flavors available for your e-cigarette model. You won’t have the chance to try the hundreds of other e-liquid flavors out there.

What Your First E-Cigarette Should Look Like

So far, we’ve spent the entirety of this article describing the potential pitfalls that await you if you buy the wrong e-cigarette as a first-time vaper. What, then, should your first e-cigarette look like? You’ll know that you’re about to buy the ideal vaping device for a new ex-smoker if it has the following features.

  • The e-cigarette should have a tank that you can fill yourself. Buying bottled e-liquid is the most cost-effective way to vape. More importantly, it’s the only way to experience the full range of e-liquid flavors in the world because most e-liquid flavors aren’t available as pre-filled cartridges.
  • The e-cigarette should have a slightly restrictive draw that allows you to inhale from the mouth to the lungs as you would when smoking. If you aren’t sure whether an e-cigarette is designed for mouth-to-lung inhaling, look at the mouthpiece. If the mouthpiece has about the same width as a cigarette filter, the e-cigarette is probably a good choice for a beginner.

I do think what you said about "mass market e-cigs is mostly true, but I also think they're good for someone who's new to vaping or who hasn't tried it before. When you're not sure if you'll like it, you won't want to run out and spend a bunch of money on a fancy rig. Just get one of those cheap ones from the gas station and see how you like it, and if you find yourself vaping a lot then make the transition to a proper rig.

Hi Kelly, First of all, thanks for giving the tips to choose the branded E-Cigarettes. But, it is advisable for pregnancy women to strictly avoid smoking. Why because, on average, smoking during pregnancy doubles the chances that a baby will be born too early or weigh less than 5 1/2 pounds at birth. Instead, opt with the healthy food choices in your diet. Get an expert advice here.
