The Importance Of Integrating Travel Into Your Lifestyle

What is a Lifestyle?

Put simply, a lifestyle refers to the way in which a person lives their life.

It encompasses the habits, moral standards, economic level, and more that makes up who a person is and how they go about their day.

One of the more common lifestyle choices in the modern day is working from the hours of 9-5, hitting the gym upon your return, cooking a meal, and then going to sleep.

This repeats day-in and day-out for years.

On the other hand, some individuals may work freelance and have the flexibility to pick up their life and travel to a new spot on a weekly basis.

They don’t exercise regularly in the gym, but they go on plenty of hikes, swims, and other activities.

The above examples are two different types of lifestyles.

While most people aren’t afforded the opportunity to live the latter lifestyle, there are benefits to working travel into your specific lifestyle if you don’t already.

Why is Travel Important to a Lifestyle?

Traveling around the world is more than about just having fun with friends and family along the way.

There are actually a large number of physical and mental benefits that come from traveling the globe.

Most notable, travel is important to a person’s lifestyle for the following five reasons:

  1. The ability to foster new types of human connections

One large aspect to a person’s lifestyle is their health, and one large aspect of a person’s health is their social life. Traveling allows a person to form new bonds with people they normally may not have ever talked to in their life. By fostering new friendships, relationships, or even brief conversations with strangers, travel allows a person to expand their social horizon.

  1. Having the opportunity to try new types of food

Different cultures have different customs, including how food is prepared and what the overall taste is reminiscent of. While there may not be any health benefits to trying new foods from different cultures, it allows a person to step out of their comfort zone and perhaps find a new love for certain delicacies.

  1. Learning about different cultures from around the world

Everybody in the world is a part of a different culture and that’s what makes people unique. For example, a traveler to New York may look at sightseeing tours of the best of the Big Apple for a personalized experience and their trip would look radically different than somebody who is visiting Iceland, as an example. By traveling the world, you can expose yourself to new customs that may resonate with you in your own life.

  1. The bolstering of mental resilience and happiness

Recent studies have shown that travel improves mental resilience and happiness, among other things. By putting yourself in a vulnerable, yet safe, position where you don’t know anybody and are in a new location, you leave your comfort zone. This forces you to grow and evolve which, overall, makes you a stronger person who is more content.

  1. Traveling helps to promote physical activity

One major health benefit of traveling is that it requires physical activity. Even if you are just lounging on a beach for an entire trip, you have to move in order to travel. Backpacking, camping, and adventure-based travel are more intense forms of physical activity as well.

How to Budget Properly for Travel

While you may recognize the benefits of travel, it can be difficult to budget for a vacation. To that end, it’s important to find ways to optimize the Three “A’s” of travel:

Area

When thinking about your next vacation, you will need to consider staying domestic or going international. International travel comes with a higher price in most cases and requires the ability to be gone for a longer period of time.

For some individuals, and international trip just may not be feasible at this point in time.

Accommodations

All travelers need to think about the roof that will be over their heads. Hostels and vacation rentals are often cheaper alternatives to hotels, but you need to be cautious of the area you’re staying in to ensure it’s safe.

Always look up reviews and compare prices to ensure you are finding the best accommodations possible.

Activities

Finally, if you can’t afford to be going and doing a new activity on a daily basis while traveling, consider setting aside money for over a year towards a vacation, or simply taking a leisurely vacation.

Relaxing and doing nothing can be quite beneficial for your mental health if your day-to-day life is constant hustle and bustle.

Safety Tips to Keep in Mind While Traveling

No matter where you go in the world, whether alone or with a group, there are a number of safety tips all travelers need to keep in mind:

  • Avoid going anywhere alone at night
  • Don’t give away too much personal information about yourself to strangers
  • Keep your wits about you, even if you think an area is safe
  • Always look up reviews for where you’re going to understand what you’re walking into
  • Tell your friends and family about your daily travel plans so someone knows where you are

Enhance your lifestyle with travel

In the past, travel was certainly more of a luxury item considering the costs associated with it.

However, new accommodation styles and discounts towards activities have allowed the average person to be able to afford a trip.

Don’t lose out on this opportunity by not traveling, as you will also be losing out on the variety of mental and physical benefits that travel provides to your lifestyle and health.
