The Driven Domestic - How to Take the Calamity Out of Cleaning

There are some unavoidable aspects of life. Work is one. Taxes are another. Both of those sting, but one is necessary to get by in life and the other is a civic duty. Other heavy things, like death and the loss of relationships happen to everyone throughout their life as well, and we learn to get by and survive without people close to us. Another fact of life that is unavoidable is the chores. Laundry, washing up, vacuuming, dusting and tidying – it never, ever ends. In fact, it can seem like you’re pushing a boulder up a hill when it comes to cleaning. But it doesn’t have to be a calamity every time you need to clean the house. Let’s take a look at how you can make it that little bit easier, each time.

Looking for a Deep Clean?

If your carpets are a bit worse for wear then they could possibly do with a good, solid, deep clean. For this you need to find some effective steam cleaners to choose from. There’s a pretty solid market for these tools, so you’ll be spoiled for choice. Do your research and work out your budget and you should be able to pick one that’s right for your needs. If this is a once-off clean like at the end of a lease or before selling a property then hiring a steam cleaner may be the better option for you.

Eat the Alien

What’s that, you say? A tried and tested tip for beating procrastination is to eat the alien. The alien is the big job that will tempt you into doing lots of little jobs to put it off for a while. In this context, the alien might be mopping the floor, or finally sorting through that drawer. Whatever it is, whatever you’ve been putting off till tomorrow, break out the knife and fork and eat that alien. This will likely give you the motivation to get stuck into the next chore.

Music Helps

Having a soundtrack to your cleaning always takes the pain away, or at least some of it. Energetic music that will pump you up is best – try some rock, dance or pop. But if your personal tastes vary from this that’s ok. The idea is to play some songs that will distract you from the rubber gloves and the toilet brush for a while. Set up a Roster

If you share your living space with others – husbands, wives, housemates or children then it’s only fair that everyone does their share of the chores. It can help to set up a roster so you’re not always stuck doing the same boring job. One week you dust, and they mop. The next you vacuum and they clean the bathroom. Set it up and pop the roster in a visible spot like the fridge or on the notice board so that the whole household has a visual reminder. You may also dedicate a day to the chores – Saturday or Sunday works well as everyone is home and is not all tired out from a big day at work, school or uni.

Sparkling Clean

By the end of this article you should have some ideas to get your space sparkling clean. Consider a steam cleaner, and beat procrastination by tackling the big jobs first. Chuck on some banging tunes to get you going and set up a roster to share out the load. Now you’re all set!
