Raise Awareness For Christmas Waste In The UK

Of all of the many seasons throughout the year, this holiday season tends to be the more popular of them all. Everyone has a certain way they explain what the holidays mean to them. Overall, Christmas is better known as the season of goodwill and giving. Essentially the festive time of year where everyone does everything they can to show how much they love Christmas. Now, this is common all throughout the US, but in the UK, things are different. The question, does the UK take festive excess too far? This has to be asked because things are done differently in the UK compared to the US.

Raise Awareness For Christmas Waste In The UK

Last year, it was estimated that residents of the UK produce 30 percent more rubbish at Christmas than at other times of the year. Believe it or not, that is a pretty significant percentage to think about. It makes you think about what can be done to change that number, to bring it down a notch. Well, the awareness of that percentage’s impact has grown and has been recognized.

Changes To Improve UK Christmas Waste

There are a number of ways to go about decreasing the amount of waste around Christmas time. First off, you could start with Christmas gift selections. Every year people invest in things like gift sets and plastic selections for different people. While physical gifts are great, what about the gift of different experiences. Anyone can spark some excitement into this year’s Christmas gifts with a gifted experience that can be remembered.

Over at Travelzoo, they have created a new infographic around Christmas waste and the idea of giving the gift of memories & travel as opposed to physical gifts. Around 2,5oo representatives were asked, and the results indicated the following:

  • 57% of the UK will be making more of an effort to be sustainable this Christmas
  • 46% of people who have considered reducing the number of physical gifts they buy, did so because of the amount of waste these presents create
  • 40% of the UK believe that experience gifts can prevent the post-Christmas blues

Raising the awareness of situations like these can lead to beneficial changes that need to be made. Christmas in the UK can still be celebrated without sacrificing the joy of the holidays.
