Love Colored Pencils Teaches You To Draw Every Step of the Way

I absolutely love to draw and color, but I’m not very good at it yet.  I have been wanting a book to teach me, but I couldn’t find anything I really liked.  The drawing books I’ve seen didn’t show me the details I was looking for.  As a matter of fact, the books assumed I already knew how to draw.  Thank goodness I found this amazing book called Love Colored Pencils by Vivian Wong.  This book teaches you to draw and color while holding your hand every step of the way.  That is what I wanted!  She shows you what colors go together, how to blend them, the best way to draw eyes, and so much more.  On one page she shows you an example of what to do, and on the other page, it is your turn to try it out (or copy what you see).

I love the “baby step” teaching, but does it help someone that already knows how to draw?  Absolutely!  No matter how good you are, there is always room to improve.  Vivian Wong gives you so many great techniques and even teaches you about different tools of the trade.  I am loving this book and learning so much.  I took some pictures of my practice pages, so be gentle with your criticism.  Remember, I’m learning!

Tool and Techniques

The first part of the book Vivian takes you through what products are the best, and what she prefers.  She explains the difference between wax core and oil core colored pencils, in a way that is easy to understand.  She talks about sketching paper, blending stumps, sharpeners, and anything else you can think of!  I love how many different techniques she shows you.  I’m excited that I now know what “hatching” is.  No, I’m not talking about a bird, it is a cool coloring technique.  Stippling is something I am very interested in.  It is a combination of dots.  When you use them far apart, the color is light and the closer the dots, the darker the color gets.  Pretty cool huh?

Vivian also teaches you about drawing and coloring in eyes, noses, and mouths.  I have always had problems with eyes!  It seems like when I’m finished it looks like a 5-year-old did it.  Yes, I’m really that much of a beginner.  She even shows you how to draw/color hair.  Another thing I wanted to learn about was shadowing, which she explains too.  I’m telling you that this book has everything you could ever want to know.  My sister is an amazing artist, and she loved the book too.  She is hoping we can draw together one day.  Hmm…do not hold your breath sis (haha).

Moving on to Animals

I have not made it to the animal drawings yet.  That is still a little out of my range, but I am getting there.  I really love the animal pages!  The first one is an owl.  The way she draws feathers is beyond my reasoning.  It is beautiful.  Someday I would love to be on her level.  I do believe it just takes a lot of practice and dedication.  Drawing is a skill, and just like any skill, it takes repetition and discipline.  If you know anyone interested in drawing or coloring, this would make an amazing gift for them!  By the way, the actual set of colored pencils does not come with the book.
