Looking for New Sports to Try? We’ve Got Ideas for You!

Doing something new is always a great way to refresh yourself, and might also add to your social life! You never know who you’ll get to know when you sign up to a new club or group, and if you’re looking for some ideas, we’ve got a few lined up. We’re talking here about sports and pursuits that you can take up for leisure purposes or, if you want, can enter into a competition. We’re also looking at some pastimes that are great for added exercise, too.

Do you want to know more? Well, we’ve tried to stick to ideas that would be great for all the family, so here goes!

Ever Tried Archery?

There’s something about the ancient and noble sport of archery that attracts young and old alike. It’s been part of folklore for so long now that it is embedded in our history – in fact, there is an arcane law still in place that demands all able-bodied men of a certain age should practice their archery every Sunday!

It’s also something that takes a lot of skill, is interesting to learn and gives a great deal of satisfaction when you start to get it right. If you’re looking for something technical and that is almost an art rather than a sport, talk to your local archery club, and find out when their next beginner’s groups are taking place – you may find it is something you enjoy very much. The kids might be able to join too, so check for age limits.

Shoot some Clays!

This one is for the adults and older children; have you ever tried clay pigeon shooting? If not you really should! You get to shoot real shotguns at flying targets, and it is quite an exhilarating sport. Once again, it’s a sport that takes a lot of skill, but once you have the stance sorted and understand the way the gun works, you’ll want to do it again and again.

The best way to get a go at clay pigeon shooting is to search for a local club near you. There are many around and they all adhere to the relevant safety rules. You don’t need your own gun in the first instance, the club will lend you one, but we reckon once you’ve tried shooting a few times you’ll want to look at buying a gun for yourself!

Take to the Water

Not in a boat, but on a very popular device called the Stand Up Paddleboard, or SUP.  These very impressive and affordable boards guarantee you exciting and invigorating fun on the water wherever you are and can be used on a variety of different types of water. You can take them out on a lake, for example, and many people do just this to – believe it or not – practice their yoga in perfect peace!

As you stand on a paddleboard and paddle your way to your destination you can use it for exploring, and don’t worry if you’re entirely new to water sports we found a great guide to the best paddle board for a beginner so you can choose one that suits you and your budget. The SUP can be used on the sea or anywhere you want and is great fun, and it’s worth checking out how it all started if you’re interested in this fast-growing and very healthy pursuit.

Sports and Social

Joining any club to start learning a new sport or pursuit is a great idea if you want to expand your social circle. Most clubs that are centred around certain sports also have social events, so it’s a great opportunity to get out and meet new people, and they will be more than happy to pass on their knowledge and experience to newcomers. Check out the above – and other sports – and you’ll soon find something you enjoy!
