How To Grow Plants Indoors Without Natural Light

Plants cannot survive without light. Everyone knows that! Light is essential for plants as it is their primary source of energy.

Most plants need lots of direct sunlight without which they do not survive.

The plants that can survive without direct sunlight are called shade loving or low light plants.

But if you are a plant lover who just loves a green living space filled with plants, yet live in a space where you don’t have direct access to sunlight, don’t fret!

Most plants can make up for lost sunlight through artificial grow lights.

You can easily grow healthy thriving plants indoors even if you don’t have a lot of natural light.

You can use grow lights to rectify the light issue. It isn’t difficult.

All you need to figure out is how much light each of your plants need, and once you have that information, you can grow a wide range of garden plants indoors with very little care.

Make the “Light” choice

If you don’t have tons of natural light in your home, or you are interested in growing a plant that needs more light than is available, you will need to compensate with artificial light.

You can use grow lights, but they might be cumbersome and tougher to manage.

LED shop lights are an economical and easily available option.

While conventional shop lights use fluorescent tubes, the latest models are available in a variety of LED styles.

While both fluorescent and LEDs work just as well for growing plants, LEDs are more energy efficient.

There are two essential factors to keep in mind when using shop lights.

1. Duration
2. Brightness

How long should I keep the grow light on?

The duration for which you keep your lights on is very important.

Natural sunlight lasts for varying times depending on the season and where you live, and it obviously does not last all day, but since sunlight is far brighter and packs more energy than shop lights, we have to compensate by lighting up our plants longer.

For developing seedlings, or plants that have not yet “settled”, you should keep the light on for a minimum of 16 hours a day.

It would be even better if the light was left on for 24 hours.

How bright should it be?

It is also important that your plants get enough brightness.

So the key is to ensure that the distance between plants and lights is not too much.

As artificial light moves away from its source, it loses its intensity.

Plants will grow long and straggly shoots if they need to reach for light.

So ideally your light source should be only 4 to 6 inches away from the top of the plants.

You should hang the light fixture in such a way that you can adjust the hanging length of lights and raise them as the plants grow taller.

The combination of high intensity light plus long light duration allows you to use basic shop lights as grow lights.

While there are many expensive grow lights available on the market, but they don’t deliver any added benefits and require the same rules to be effective.
