How to Build a Well-designed House on a Budget

Building an affordable house doesn’t mean that it will look cheap and drab. There are many ways you can maximize your money toward a well-designed house with a classy and elegant layout. You don’t need to spend millions of dollars. You just need to be smart about your home design and architecture.

Go Green

Go solar in Idaho. Solar panels can power your whole house. This is one of the few expensive investments that you have to do so that you can cut down your electric bill in the future. In the long run, you’ll get your money back in terms of the low cost of your energy bill.

Keep it Small

Honestly, who needs a five-bedroom house unless you’re the Brady Bunch? You don’t need all that space to store an old sofa or an outdated stereo. Declutter your stuff to see that you actually have space in your house that is large enough. Keep only the needed and valuable items. If you don’t need some of the items, throw them away. Smaller space will cost less obviously.

Opt for an Open-floor Concept

An open floor plan means that there are fewer walls, which means fewer materials and less money that you’ll have to shell out. An open-plan layout is a simple concept that can achieve a multitude of things: It’s cheaper, and it increases the perceived space of a small house. Also, it bonds families better because they can spend more time together in the connected rooms of the house.

Choose Smart Materials

You want granite for the countertop and stained wood for the flooring, baseboard, and door trim. But you don’t exactly have the budget for it. What you can accommodate is good ceramic tiles, paint-grade doors, drywall, and a laminated countertop. If you want to build an affordable house, you must make some hard cuts along the way. You’ll appreciate this sacrifice once you’re writing the check for your mortgage or your payment to the contractor.

Splurge Strategically

You don’t have to be frugal in all the aspects of your home building. You can choose better and more expensive materials in areas where you’ll most likely spend a lot of time in. This means that you can install good lighting fixtures in the living room or have a better countertop for the kitchen. If your bedroom and bathroom mean a lot to your comfort, splurge on the window treatments there, the bathroom fixture, and many other things. The point is not to sacrifice your comfort for frugality. You can still be smart about your choices without needing to “hate” the design of your own house.

Shop at Discount Warehouses or Online

You don’t have to shop for furniture in those expensive showrooms. They mark up their products many times over. You’re not getting anything different from if you just buy from online stores and discount warehouses. Make a list of products that you need and search for them on the Internet. Make sure to compare and contrast the prices so that you get the most of your purchases.

While it can be tempting to spend every dime you have in your bank account for your new house, it isn’t a smart move. Remember that you will probably have to maintain the house and spend on its repairs and replacements in the future. It would do you well to save more money now when there are opportunities to design a cost-efficient house wisely.
