“First Time Garment Fitting: The Absolute Beginner’s Guide” – A Great Source To Help You With Your Sewing Needs

A few years back I asked for a sewing machine for Christmas. I thought it would be fun to make my own clothes. Well, the sewing machine sat in my closet for 2 years before I ventured to open it. Why? Because I was intimidated by it. I had no clue how to go about using it. Then someone needed some sewing done and I broke out the machine. It turned out that it wasn’t that difficult to use. And, it was fun!  I still haven’t made any clothes, because, again, that seems intimidating. But, it doesn’t have to be, especially with a book called “First Time Garment Fitting: The Absolute Beginner’s Guide – Learn By Doing * Step-By-Step Basics + 8 Projects,” by Sarah Veblen and published by Creative Publishing International.

What’s Inside The Book?

In “First Time Garment Fitting,” the author, Sarah Veblen, helps teach you how to adapt patterns so that you can create clothing that fits you, and not clothing that just fits you, but clothing that fits you well. There are four sections in the book:

  1. Fitting Fundamentals,
  2. Creating a Fitting Muslin,
  3. Altering Patterns, and
  4. Fitting Projects (this includes working with a skirt and bodice).

So, if you’re intimidated by patterns and sewing your own clothing, this book may be the perfect fit (excuse the pun) for you! Throughout the book, you will find step-by-step directions, several tips, the definitions of terms and much more. It’s definitely a book that will make it easier to utilize patterns and sew clothing.

What I really enjoy about the book is that the author is very down-to-earth in her way of teaching. She doesn’t speak over your head. So, for a novice, like myself, this book makes sewing feel like an attainable goal that I can accomplish. She even helps you with simple things, like moving a seam and blending seam lines.  And, with all the information and tips that she teaches you, you’ll have a great foundational knowledge about working with and sewing patterns. After reading through her book, I think I won’t be afraid anymore to go to the craft store and buy a pattern for something I’d love to make.

The book is available in paperback as part of a “First Time” series for $19.99 (ISBN: 9781589239623, 128 pages) on the Quarto Knows website.
