Earth Day Is Done But “The ABC’s of Living Green” Teaches Us That We Have Work To Do

Earth Day was April 22nd.  But, honestly, I wish every day was Earth Day. When I watch documentaries that discuss our waste problem and air pollution and how we’re harming the Earth, I cringe. I doubt it will ever happen that every day will become Earth Day.  But, we can try to educate ourselves and those around us about how we can take care of our Earth as a daily practice, and not just on some special holiday. One great resource for teaching our children about the care of our Earth is a book called “The ABC’s of Living Green,” by Theresa A. McKeown and illustrated by Arisbet Cantu. This is a book that is beautifully written with earth-inspired poems created for each letter of the alphabet. The poems provide lessons and enlightenment on how we can take care of Mother Earth.

It reminds us that through thought, word, and deed, we can make a difference in making our Earth a better place to be. The poems also teach us that it’s important to be conscientious, active, responsible and willing to enact change to help our Earth and ourselves. And, remember, every little part helps. The author asks us to come together to heal the harm that the Earth has endured.

“The ABC’s of Living Green” Poetry And The Author Have Much To Offer The Reader!

According to the author’s website, “As an author, Theresa is dedicated to estimating rather than underestimating the wisdom of children. Her philosophy is that kids are fully adept at understanding nuance and meaning and it’s not necessary to talk down to them. She is dedicated to creating a new paradigm in the children’s book world by introducing work that fully embraces the insightfulness, perception and unlimited intellectual potential of today’s youth.”

In her book, the poems are beautiful and mature, but easy to comprehend. They are thoughtful and could definitely provide an opening point for further discussion with your child.  The illustrations throughout the book are colorful, with many earth-tone colors. The pictures are also inspiring, encouraging children to think about what the poem is speaking to them about. This is a very nice book with so many lessons to offer—poetry and rhyming, the alphabet, taking care of our world, and more!

“The ABC’s of Living Green” is the third and final book in “The ABC’s of Everything” series, which has received great reviews. The book is for children ages 8-14. It’s available in hardcover on the author’s website for $17.95.
