I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but subscription boxes are the new, popular item to have. And, they’re super fun! It’s like receiving a special gift every month, and it’s not even Christmas! You can find a unique subscription box for just about anyone’s tastes and preferences. If you have someone in your life that loves putting things together, figuring out how things work, working with STEM and/or electronics, have I got the subscription box for you: the Creation Crate!
According to their website, the Creation Crate is a “teacher-designed curriculum (that) is the most educational and hands on subscription box in the world.” It teaches people how to build electronics with really cool, useful DIY projects that you can have delivered to your front door every month. Some examples of their projects include a mood lamp, a distance detector, a weather station, and an audio visualizer. How cool is that?
What Was In My Creation Crate?
I received the mood lamp, which is a lamp that changes colors and it only turns on when it’s dark. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The project is challenging, but not too difficult. I gave it to a 13-year-old boy and he felt capable of completing it.
What is included in the box? As listed on the website, “Every box is going to be different depending on the project, but the 3 main components are: the UNO R3 (Arduino-compatible), which is like a pocket-sized computer, various components, and the instruction booklet. The core sections of the instruction booklet are: Hardware, Programming, Common Errors, and Exercises. Each section contains detailed explanations of the steps. You’ll also be given a password to access a project support page on this site!”
Creation crate is meant for people 12+ years old (but they say younger ages could do them with parental guidance). Even adults could do them!
There is a 12-month curriculum, with a different project for each month. The Creation Crate website says, “Once you receive all 12 badges you will have more hands on programming experience than 99% of current college level computer science students.” That’s impressive! This would be a wonderful accompaniment to a homeschooling curriculum or even as an after-school project to keep kids busy while learning and having fun!
Prices vary according to how many months you choose to subscribe to—the more months you choose, the lower the price per month. Prices range from $22.49 – $29.99 per month. I’m so happy to finally see a subscription box for the older child! And, it’s a fabulous one that has a lot to offer!
