How Is It Bad For The Environment If You Use Bottled Water?

You have probably heard how important it is to drink plenty of fluids each day. Water is one of the best fluids to drink, as it’s readily available and good for you; if you remove any additives and contaminants. You may be thinking that the best way to ensure the water you drink is pure is to buy it in bottled form. This is not the case.

In the case of most bottled water, there is nothing to suggest that it’s any better for you than the water which comes straight from the tap. Drinking bottled water can also have an adverse effect on the environment. We are going to explain why this is the case. We are also going to look at how you can obtain fresh and clean drinking water, for you and your family.

Why is bottled water bad for the environment?

If you drink water from a bottle, the bottle then has to be disposed of. Many of these bottles are not recycled and they end up in landfill, or in the oceans. Both of these eventualities are not good for the environment.

This is not the only negative environmental effect that results from drinking bottled water. You may not realize that it takes twice as much water to produce the bottle than the amount of water it holds. You can see that this is not a good thing when it comes to making the best use of water supplies.

How you can make sure tap water is safe to drink

If drinking bottled water is not a good idea, then how can you make sure that the water which comes from the taps in your home is safe for you and your family to drink? The answer to this is that you should filter the water. There are several different water filtration systems on the market, for you to choose from.

Two of the most popular solutions are counter top water filtration systems and under sink water filtration systems. If you choose a countertop water filter this does not have to be plumbed in; it works straight from the tap. The problem with this type of system is that it takes up space on the counter top.

If you choose an under sink water filter, this does require plumbing. There are a couple of advantages to using this type of system; the filter is hidden away under the sink and you can produce more filtered water on an on-going basis than you can be using a counter top filter.

Whichever type of water filtration system you use, you get the benefit of providing fresh and clean water for you and your family. This is important, given that the water which comes straight from the tap can be contaminated with chemicals, additives, and dirt. Filtering is a more certain way of obtaining clean water than drinking bottled water, and it’s far better for the environment.

Thanks for a great article. You are absolutely right that we should use tap water and not bottled water.

Just one comment. What about a faucet filter such as Culligan (http://culligan.com) or Tap Water (http://tappwater.co)? We've found that these are actually more efficient and convenient than pitchers and other countertop filters.
