Which Literacy Skills Are Addressed?

Rhyming is a necessary beginning reading skill. As kids learn to rhyme, they can begin to sound out words as they read.

Nursery rhymes allow listening for and practicing rhyming sounds and words.

Many nursery rhymes and children’s books contain alliteration or repetitive sounds. Have children come up with alliteration for their name, such as silly Sam singing a song.

Building a solid vocabulary provides a wealth of benefits. Gather several books featuring Baa Baa Black Sheep.

Discuss the meaning of the words, and read through each book.

All this repetition helps children to become better readers. Early readers will gain confidence in being able to read the rhyme even if they do not recognize all the written words.

The delight in reading the rhyme and singing the song helps children grow to love books. A love of books and reading provides lifelong benefits.

What About Reading Comprehension?

Some students struggle to provide a detailed retelling of a story. They are developing and instilling reading comprehension skills and strategies that are not a challenge with the story characters available in this packet.

Students will find it easy to retell the story of Baa Baa Black Sheep using the paper characters. This is an effective tool for building reading fluency and comprehension.

Students with solid retelling strategies can think critically and increase their level of comprehension. Students will also improve their language development.

How Are Sequencing Skills Practiced?

Sequencing cards are a handy resource to have available when teaching young children. This activity packet includes a description of how a farmer gets wool from the sheep.

Students can demonstrate comprehension of the process by cutting and pasting the sequence cards in the correct order.

Which Fine Motor Skills Are Used?

These worksheets provide much-needed cutting practice for little hands. They offer the chance to build fine motor skills.

Learning to use scissors is a challenge for little ones whose fine motor skills aren’t fully developed. Before working on more intricate cutting designs, preschoolers need to practice cutting straight.

Younger children need lots of practice with scissors before moving on to more intricate projects. Most of your students will be able to cut out the vocabulary cards and sequencing cards.

Some students may need assistance in cutting out the story characters.

The vocabulary cards provide the opportunity to fold a piece of paper. Folding paper requires the integration of skills.

A child must have fine motor dexterity to pick up the piece of paper, make a bend, and reinforce the bend into a fold.

Paper folding uses fine motor and visual-motor skills to get the folds in the right place.

The maze provides fine motor skills practice and helps build visual tracking skills that are important for developing readers. Learning to complete a maze builds patience and problem-solving skills.
