An Exciting Novel and Yoga Are Perfect Ways To Keep Your Kids Entertained This Upcoming Summer

Summer will be here soon and kids will be out of school.  You know what that means?  Lots of hours to fill with something for the kids to do.  Well, how about reading a novel or some other type of book?  Reading is so wonderful, as it entertains and is not screen time.  It stimulates the imagination.  And, it can be fun and educational!  The following are some fun titles that you may want to pick up for your kids’ summer reading. The following includes fun novels for the older kids and an instructional yoga book for the younger kids.

“The Battle Of Junk Mountain” – An Enjoyable Novel

First off is “The Battle of Junk Mountain” by Lauren Greenberg. This novel is about a girl named Shayne, who wants to spend her “traditional” summer doing things that are tradition—how she spent her past summers.  But, from the start, things aren’t going as planned, as they sometimes do (or don’t), and this isn’t going so well with Shayne.  But, sometimes things happen for a reason, and this is how life teaches us lessons, as Shayne shall soon see for herself.

She’s come to spend time with her grandmother, Bea, who lives on the coast of Maine. Bea likes to collect and categorize things she collects. In fact, she has a collection of things piled high in her home and this has become known as “junk mountain.” As the reader will soon see, Bea suffers from hoarding issues, which is such a complex issue significant of other things. So, although this is a summer visit for Shayne, it becomes an adventure in so many different ways. You’ll want to read the novel to see how!

This book is a very enjoyable read. It’s easy to relate to and the writing is smooth and entertaining. This book is listed for children ages 8-12 years. It’s available on Amazon in hardcover for $16.99 and Kindle for $9.99.

“Elektra’s Adventures In Tragedy” – A Coming-Of-Age Novel

The second novel is “Elektra’s Adventures in Tragedy” by Douglas Rees. This book is for the older children, ages 13+ years.  It’s a “coming-of-age story about one Greek-American girl’s odyssey home” (taken from back cover of book). It starts off with Elektra stuck in the car with her mother and her sister, Thalia.  Elektra is in a foul mood, as her mother is driving and moving them away from their father, who lives in Mississippi.  They are on their way to California and Elektra is not happy.  They move to a houseboat, which sounds great at first. But, it’s actually just an old trailer on a barge in the mud.

What would Odysseus do? Elektra asks herself.” She does whatever she can to get back home. “But things are not always what they seem, and home is wherever you decide to make it” (quotes taken from back cover).

This novel is funny and sarcastic at times, which teenagers will get a kick out of.  If you’ve read Homer’s “The Odyssey,” you’ll appreciate the references to it in “Elektra’s Adventures in Tragedy.”

“Elektra’s Adventures in Tragedy” is available on Amazon for pre-order for $12.32 (hardcover). It will be released May 8, 2018. It will also be available in Kindle form for $9.99.

How About Some Yoga?

Novel and Yoga 2

The third book is “Yoga Frog,” by Nora Carpenter and illustrated by Mark Chambers.  This book is listed as for children ages 4-8 years.  Yoga Frog is a cute little guy who is here to introduce the reader to yoga. He encourages kids to do yoga to help them feel better because that’s what he does when he doesn’t feel like “his happy, froggy self” (p. 1).

Yoga Frog makes yoga look easy.  He also explains how to do each position in a fun, easy-to-understand manner.  The book even has a Yoga Frog pull-out poster that summarizes the positions and could serve as an easy reference to post on the wall.  This book will be released on May 29, 2018. It will be on Kindle for $9.99 at Amazon. And, it will be in hardcover for $14.99.

So, there you go. Some great choices for reading in the summer or anytime.  I love to encourage the little (and older) readers and this selection is a fun, entertaining bunch of books. Have fun and enjoy!
