Owning a car can be great, especially if you have a reliable set of wheels that you’re able to drive around for years. However, not all vehicles have lived up to those expectations. Some models have been plagued with reliability issues over the years. Whether it is engine trouble or costly repairs, each of these seven vehicles has proven to be extremely unreliable.
7. Chrysler PT Cruiser (2001-2010)

The PT Cruiser has plagued me for much of my life. My best friend’s mom had one in high school and he wound up driving it, which means I wound up in the passenger’s seat. Just when I thought I’d escaped it, when my wife and I first started dating, she pulled up driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser. One of the first things I told her was that we needed to get her a new car. Wouldn’t you know it, it was one of the most unreliable vehicles I’ve ever had the displeasure of sitting in. Hers would overheat any time it sat still, but common complaints included engine failures, electrical issues, and malfunctioning air conditioning systems. The car’s weak automatic transmission was also a common failure of the PT Cruiser. People often found themselves dealing with expensive repairs, especially as the car got older. Most people regretted buying one, though my wife defends her $1,500 purchase to this day.
6. Jaguar XJ (2003-2009)

Jaguar is often thought to be a refined, luxurious brand. When it came to the 2003-2009 model of the XJ, that reputation took a hit. This generation of the XJ was riddled with electronic malfunctions, especially with its air suspension and braking system. Many people also reported issues with the transmission that would transform the car into a very expensive, very large paperweight. While Jaguar has improved the quality of the XJ, some serious damage was done to the brand’s reputation by this generation of the car.
5. Ford Pinto (1971-1980)

Ford didn’t win any awards for the Pinto. This car’s most infamous problem was that the gas tank could (and often would) explode in rear-end collisions. Unfortunately, this defect tarnished Ford’s reputation and led to multiple lawsuits. Although it was a cool-looking vehicle, the Pinto’s problems extended beyond that major safety concern. It was known to be poorly built and unreliable. You’d often see them broken down on the side of the road. While it was marketed to be a cheap, economical car, the eventual repair costs often outweighed the initial affordability of the Pinto.
4. Range Rover (2003-2012)

When I was still a mechanic I loathed seeing Range Rovers being pulled into the lot on a tow truck, and it happened often. The early models, particularly Range Rovers built between 2003 and 2012, are infamous for being unreliable. It is something Jeremy Clarkson joked about frequently on Top Gear. There were a number of electrical problems, engine failures, transmission issues, the list can go on and on. The high cost of repairs and frequent breakdowns made this generation of Range Rover stressful to own.
3. Chevrolet Vega (1970-1977)

While this is a good-looking car, the Chevrolet Vega was anything but reliable. It was initially marketed to have good fuel economy, but it became known for its mechanical flaws. The engine was prone to overheating. Rust was also a big problem with this car. Some Vegas showed signs of corrosion just months after ownership. General Motors attempted to address these problems with recalls and updates, but the Vega had already made a (bad) name for itself.
2. Fiat 500L (2014-present)

This car is still being made, but it hasn’t improved much in its 10 years on the market. The 500L has been a huge source of frustration for Fiat owners. Some of the most common complaints for this car are electrical problems, faulty transmissions, and issues with the vehicle’s infotainment system. While its overall look is still appealing to some people, the consistent history of mechanical issues often drive potential buyers away (as they should).
1. Yugo GV (1985-1992)

I recently mentioned this car on the list of “Foreign Car Design Fails,” but it has earned its spot here too. The Yugo GV is often considered to be one of the worst cars to ever be sold in the United States. It came to America from Yugoslavia and aimed to provide European comfort and style at an affordable price. But maybe it was too affordable. The Yugo GV quickly became known for its unreliability. It had the tendency to leave drivers stranded on the side of the road until it was taken off the market in the early 90s.
Poor Build Quality and Mechanical Failures

There are many car brands that have experienced recalls or manufacturing issues over the years. The models listed here stand out as some of the most unreliable cars that have ever been made. From poor quality to electrical problems, these cars often left their owners frustrated, if not stranded. As technology advances, many carmakers are learning from these past mistakes and reliability is improving, but each of these cars stands as a cautionary tale.
