5 Mistakes to Avoid When Remodeling Your Kitchen

“Last Updated: 04/19/2018”

A kitchen remodel is probably one of the biggest home projects you can undertake. It is a very important room in the house. It also is a room that has to be designed for function and is home to some of the most expensive and important appliances in your house. With so much riding on the project, it really helps to learn from the mistakes of others and take a look at some of the top mistakes that you’ll want to avoid. You should check into hiring a reliable kitchen contractor if this is more then a DIY job!

Mistake #1: Getting Cabinets That Go to the Ceiling

While it may create a stunning look to have cabinets that go from floor to ceiling or countertop to ceiling, this just isn’t a very practical design. When you really think about it, how are you going to be able to reach those top cabinets? Unless you have short ceilings or are ten feet tall, chances are you will barely use the top cabinets and all they will be useful for is gathering dust. Besides not being used, they are a waste of money that could be put to better use.

Mistake #2: Not Checking Color Options in Your Kitchen

Going to the store and choosing the colors for cabinets, flooring, tiles, and paint, may seem like a good way to streamline things, but it is a big mistake. The lighting at the store is probably not even close to the lighting in your kitchen, and lighting can drastically change the way colors look. Make sure you get samples and check things out in your kitchen. Put flooring samples on the floor and tape paint samples to the wall. Putting the sample in the place where it’ll be will give you the truest representation of how it will look in the end.

Mistake #3: Not Following Your Gut Feeling

Whether it is about a paint color, appliance choice or who to hire, if you feel something strongly, then follow that gut feeling. Our intuition is almost always right. If you are unsure, maybe take a day or two before making your decision. Usually, you will discover that the gut feeling you had was the right one and will avoid making decisions you’ll later regret.

Mistake #4: Forgetting to Think About Function

The kitchen is one of the most-used rooms in a home. It has to be functional. However, it is so easy to get wrapped up in the design element that you forget you’ll actually have to use this room once the kitchen remodeling is done. Make sure that you aren’t making choices solely because something looks good. Always be thinking about how it will function once you are using the room.

Mistake #5: Trying to Design the Kitchen Yourself

This kind of goes along with function. There are many aspects to a kitchen design that the average person knows nothing about. It is usually a good idea to get some professional input on things. Even if you come up with a design idea, just get a professional to look it over. You may be surprised at the things they notice that you totally overlooked.

Undergoing a kitchen remodel can be costly, so you need to make sure you are making the right decisions and creating a final kitchen that is usable. By avoiding these five mistakes, you should be able to come up with a final result that is just as amazing as you hoped.
