So, your flight tickets and your accommodation are booked, and you’re set to jet off on your trip in a short while. But, don’t put away your to-do list just yet. The final days before setting off on holiday are often filled with wondering whether there’s anything you’ve forgotten – and, you might have. Whether it’s something you’ve totally forgotten about or something that you didn’t even realize you needed, we’ve put together a list of essential things you need before you set off.
#1. Travel Insurance:
Travel insurance is one of those things that you may not have realized you needed, but you should definitely get it. There’s always a chance that something could go wrong on your trip, and you might have to cancel or cut it short – travel insurance will make sure that you’re financially covered if things don’t go to plan. If you’re traveling within Europe, you won’t usually need a visa for travel – unless your travel plans are for after Brexit finally happens, in which case you may need to apply for a visa – the government are expected to release more details on this when it becomes applicable. If you’re traveling outside of Europe, double check beforehand to find out whether or not you will need a visa to visit. Many countries will allow you to get your visa when you arrive, however, others such as the U.S., for example, require you to apply for your visa at least a few weeks before you set off. This is something that you should do as early as possible – the last thing that you want to happen is to be refused entry because you don’t have the right travel documents.
#3. Copies of Important Documents:
Carrying paper documents around with you when you’re traveling can be a bit of a risk – if you lose your bag, or are a victim to theft, you could find yourself in a situation where you don’t have important documents such as your flight tickets, visa documents, or hotel reservation. Whenever possible, the best idea is to get electronic copies of any important documents. You can then email these to yourself or save them in your smartphone, and it’s also a good idea to email copies of them to a friend or family member back home, so that you can have them re-sent to you if you lose them during your trip and can’t access them any other way.
#4. Do Your Research:
Last but not least, do some research on the area that you will be visiting. Along with finding out all the fun stuff such as local activities, tourist attractions and restaurants that you’d like to eat at, it’s worth spending some time researching important factors as well, like where you can find the nearest hospital or doctor’s surgery, how the public transport in the area works, and information on any known scams in the area that you’ll want to avoid. Take some time to learn about the local customs, too – for example, some countries such as Morocco expect you to tip for any small service you receive.
