4 Things to Avoid While Under Quarantine

Things are terrifying right now due to the coronavirus. Colds can develop anywhere from one to three days after someone comes into contact with the virus and COVID-19 lasts even longer. The spread of the virus is obviously scary, but all the unknowns associated with this pandemic are causing anxiety levels to skyrocket. Across the country, people are getting sick, businesses are closing their doors, people are losing their jobs, and families are stuck indoors nearly 24 hours a day.

It’s overwhelming.

Focusing on your physical and mental health while under quarantine isn’t just a good idea — it’s imperative.

It’s easy to fall into a funk right now and waste away your days and nights, simply just waiting for things to return to normal. That could take months, though, so it’s important to start taking your mental and physical health seriously — and start doing it right now!

Here are some crucial things to avoid this quarantine that will have a direct impact on your mental and physical health:

Too much screen time

One of the worst ways you can spend your quarantine is to rely on screens to pass the time. Too many video games, TV, movies, and even cell phones can put you in a major funk and negatively impact your health and wellbeing.

Instead, give yourself one day or night per week to just veg out and watch Netflix for hours.

Too much alcohol and tobacco

These unhealthy vices are terrible for you — but you already know that. It can be easy to abuse these substances while you’re stuck inside all the time but you have to fight it. Smoking can lead to plenty of health concerns and ruin your teeth and gums. In fact, about 90% of people who suffer from periodontitis have been known to smoke. And spending too much time drinking during quarantine can drastically impact your life. Do everything you can to quit smoking and try and only have a few drinks on the weekend!

Too much medication

Don’t let these scary times cause you to rely on prescription medications. Take whatever your doctor recommends, sure, but it’s imperative that you do not abuse any kind of medication.

Instead, contact a doctor via telehealth. Even if you want to discuss your health concerns with multiple doctors, you absolutely can! Most doctors understand the value of a second opinion and they are not offended when a patient wants one.

Too much worrying

It’s easy to worry right now and a little worrying here and there isn’t too bad. It’s practically unavoidable right now. But sitting and worrying for hours is only going to cause physical and mental health issues down the line. Don’t think about the things you can’t control. Instead, cook yourself a delicious and healthy meal, take some time for yourself, and relax. You’ll be okay.

As long as you’re taking your mental health and physical health seriously during this quarantine, you’re going to get through this. Avoid some of these unhealthy habits and try and relax your mind a bit! Good luck and stay safe!
