Maximize Storage

It feels like there is never enough storage at my house. Honestly, I don’t feel like I have much stuff to declutter or throw away. I just need more places to store my items. Here are 10 ways to maximize storage for when you are living in small spaces.

1) Floating shelves

If you don’t have enough floor or walking space for a dresser or shelf, you could try using floating shelves. Floating shelves add storage without decreasing the walking space of your room. You could even do a few floating shelves stacked above each other. This storage hack doesn’t take up much space and is cool to look at.

2) Vertical storage

Most of the time, storage issues can be solved by maximizing the vertical space in a room. Instead of buying short bookcases or dressers, use tall shelves. Place things you need less frequently on the harder to reach shelves, and enjoy more storage space. Besides, tall bookshelves just have a classy look.

3) Under-the-bed storage

There’s a reason student apartments have a raised bed. Whether you use cinderblocks or risers to raise your bed, under the bed has tons of storage potential. You can keep short drawers, a guitar case, or even a laundry hamper under the bed. Under-the-bed storage is nice because utilizing it doesn’t remove from any of the walking space of your room.

4) Hang the laundry hamper

The laundry hamper can be ugly and awkwardly take up space in the bedroom. Instead of using a traditional laundry hamper, you could get a laundry bag and hang it to the back of your door. This will clear up some floor space and create more room for other storage options.

5) Organize your drawers

Having lots of drawers does no good if you aren’t maximizing the space inside of those drawers. Use drawer organizers or research different clothing folding methods to increase drawer space – rolling shirts and pants, rather than folding them, can take up less space. It’s nice to increase space and to have more organized drawers.

6) Command Hooks

Command Hooks have so many different uses; they can be used to hang decorations, your bathrobe, or your backpack. They are small and easy to remove which is great if you are in a rental and can’t drill any holes in the walls.

7) Utilize the pantry door

If you need more storage in the pantry, make use of the door. There are tons of different styles and sizes of storage racks to hang on doors. It adds some shelf space on a typically underused storage area.

8) Use the Headboard

You can buy or DIY a headboard with shelves. This extra storage behind your bed can help clear some clutter off of your desk or floor. Plus, it’s just convenient to have somewhere to store a water bottle, phone, or book by the bed.

9) Use furniture that doubles as a storage unit

There are different types of furniture that are made specifically to increase storage, like headboards, hollow ottomans, and tables with drawers. Investing in a few of these pieces of furniture could help free up some storage space.

10) Declutter

I originally said I don’t feel like I have much I could throw away, but truthfully there probably is some stuff I could do without. There are normally a few things we could all afford to toss or donate. It’s easiest to maximize storage space when we have fewer items to store.
