It seems like every day we hear a story of someone being a victim of sexual assault or some type of sex crime. Hearing these stories can make you feel angry, sad, and helpless. Some of the victims are so young, it breaks your heart. Many others have gone through years and years of suffering from the abuse from a friend, a family member, a boyfriend, or a person that they trusted. In the book, Things We Haven’t Said: Sexual Violence Survivors Speak Out, edited by Erin E. Moulton, we get to hear the voices of victims speaking out against sexual violence.
Speaking Out
Things We Haven’t Said: Sexual Violence Survivors Speak Out consists of essays, poems, letters, vignettes, interviews, and concrete information. As you read each page, you can hear and feel their pain. Even if you have never experienced sexual violence or abuse, reading their stories will bring out some type of emotion in you.
One of my favorite parts in the book is a letter that a daughter wrote to her mom. The daughter is basically asking her mom why she did not help her. Why did she ignore her? Other parts of the book gives you some background information on how you can identify when something is wrong with a child. There are behavioral signs to look for as a parent, a teacher, or guardian.
Layout Of The Book
After each victim tells their story, there is a question and answer section. This section lets us know how the victim coped or is coping and healing from their pain. This section also asks if the victims felt the justice system was fair for their case. In addition, the victims are asked what are some ways they can help others or resources they wished were available to them. There is a glossary and a list of resources for anyone that might need help.
