I love books for kids that tell them a story while also teaching them about the world or about life. One such book is “Spartan & The Green Egg – The Poachers of Tiger Mountain,” by Nabila Khashoggi. This is a book that provides a fun, educational, and adventurous story along with colorful, engaging pictures I think many kids will enjoy!
The story is about a group of kids, Spartan and his friends, and their trusty dog, Grimm, who travel on their spaceship, which is the Green Egg. Their spaceship drops them off in Bhutan, which is in Asia.
They quickly find themselves in a predicament with a snow leopard, an endangered, beautiful animal. Soon after that they are almost shot by a flying arrow, which is actually a stray arrow coming from an archery competition (archery is the official sport of Bhutan). Spartan’s group makes friends with the villagers, who provide them with an introduction to their culture.
Spartan and his friends soon learn about two orphaned Bengal tiger cubs who are in danger due to poachers. They decide they need to get the tiger cubs to safety at Tiger Mountain, which is in a secret location so as to keep poachers from getting the tigers. Will they be able to help the tiger cubs and get them to safety? You’ll have to read to find out.

“Spartan and the Green Egg: The Poachers of Tiger Mountain” is wonderful for exposing children to other parts of our world, their cultures, and their issues, such as helping to protect endangered animals. It also models such wonderful things as friendship, empathy, and stewardship. It reminds children the importance of being responsible and taking care of our world and its creatures.
The author, Nabila Khashoggi, was inspired to create the Spartan & The Green Egg books by the stories she used to make up and tell her son when he was a toddler.
