3 Simple Safety Upgrades That Will Make Your Home More Secure

safety upgradesSafety should always be a primary concern around the house. From protecting young kids from getting accidentally hurt to preventing intruders from entering the house, safety features around your home are important. Whether you were one of the 11.2% of Americans who will move this year or if you’ve been in your house for several years, there are always safety upgrades that can be done. So let’s explore a few things you can do to make your home safer.

Smoke and CO Detectors

Each and every home should have both smoke detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. These alarms are imperative to keeping everyone in the building safe, especially with apartments being one of the four property classes that account for half of high-rise fires. So you should already have several smoke detectors throughout your home and at least one CO detector on every floor. If you don’t have these, it’s important you take care of that. And if you do already have them, you may want to upgrade them — today’s smoke and CO detectors meet updated safety regulations. If your alarms are outdated, consider replacing them for increased safety. There are even systems that can detect contaminants like mold and other toxins you should consider buying. With indoor air quality being two to five times dirtier than outdoor air, it’s important to be aware of contaminants in your home. Pro tip: to reduce the amount of contaminants in your indoor air, purchase household products and paints labeled as low or no VOC.

Lighting

Most homes are pretty well lit so people can see when moving around during the evening. And many homeowners invest in lighting for aesthetic purposes, too. But lighting plays an integral role in safety. First, having properly lit hallways, stairways, and even outdoor paths can prevent people from falling and getting hurt. But lighting can also make your property and home more secure from burglaries. When you have plenty of lighting, including lights by all windows and doors, it’s likely to deter burglars from trying to enter your home. Furthermore, you need to have lighting throughout your property so people have nowhere to hide in the dark yard. When choosing lighting, make sure you choose options that will make everything very visible and always keep security in mind.

Locks on Doors and Windows

This may sound obvious, but you should have locks on all of your windows and doors. Having proper locks can prevent people from entering your home or even certain rooms within your house. Unfortunately, many people have outdated locks that are easy to break or some homeowners may not have locks on all windows and doors. With that in mind, if you have old and outdated, or nonexistent, locks, you should consider updating them. Houses are filled with various items that you want to protect — like the $3.86 billion worth of home fitness equipment people bought in 2018. Or you may have a certain room, like an office or metal garage, where you don’t want kids getting into unsupervised that needs a lock. Either way, updating locks on windows and doors will help better protect both your belongings and your family.

Making your home safer and more secure doesn’t have to involve a lot of work. So keep these simple safety upgrades in mind to improve the safety of your home.
