RAINBOW FROSTING INGREDIENTS
This fun Frosting recipe uses easy-to-find ingredients to create a fun frosting you can use on cupcakes and cakes.
All you need is:
- white frosting
- gel food dyes
RAINBOW FROSTING RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS
Take the white frosting and divide it into 3 bowls.
To each bowl, add 1-2 drops of gel food dye and stir to combine.
Add the colored frosting to the 12-inch piping bags without a coupler or tip.
Snip the ends of the tips and set them aside.
Place a 1M or 2D piping tip inside of the 16-inch piping bag. The tip should be pushed down as far as it can go.
Cut the piping bag right underneath the teeth of the tip.
You do not want frosting caught on the plastic from the bag.
Place the colored bags of frosting inside of the 16-inch bag and push them all down so that each of the colors is inside of the tip.
Squeeze with even pressure to make sure that all three colors are coming out together.
If you want to make these cupcakes look like unicorn cupcakes, place the unicorn wrappers around the cupcakes before icing.
Make a swirl, using the rainbow frosting, on the top of the cupcake, and add sprinkles.
In less than 15 minutes, you’ll have a fun snack or dessert that’s sure to become a new favorite!

HOW LONG DOES IT REALLY TAKE TO MAKE RAINBOW FROSTING?
This Frosting recipe takes approximately 15 minutes. TOTAL. This includes:
- About 9 minutes to make the white frosting
- Close to 3 minutes to divide the frosting and dye it
- Around 3 minutes to place the frosting in the piping bags
HOW DO I STORE FROSTING?
You can store leftover Frosting in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to 7 days.
Simply, re-whip with your stand mixer when you need to use it again.
CAN I USE RAINBOW FROSTING ON ANY CAKES AND CUPCAKES?
Yes, you can use rainbow frosting on any cakes and cupcakes.
This frosting is extremely versatile and will look great on any cakes and cupcakes.
CAN I USE CANNED WHITE FROSTING TO MAKE RAINBOW FROSTING?
You can try using canned white frosting to make the this frosting.
Although, I never tested that, I’m sure it will work out great. The steps will be the same.
CAN I MAKE RAINBOW FROSTING AHEAD OF TIME?
No, I do not recommend making white frosting ahead of time.
White frosting forms a crust after it is made so it is best to use it right after making it.
If you really need to, you can make white frosting ahead of time.
CAN I ADD MORE THAN THREE COLORS TO A PIPING BAG?
No, I do not suggest using more than three colors when making rainbow frosting.
More 12-inch piping bags will not fit into the larger 16-inch bag.
WHAT GOES WELL WITH RAINBOW FROSTING?
