My Last Summer as a Fat Girl

My Last Summer as a Fat Girl

This book is written by Dr. Ellie Henkind Katz, and it is about a woman who has struggled most of her life with weight issues and an eating disorder. The story is written like her personal diary.  Her problems with food started when she was just a little girl.  Her mother had a terrible view of obese people.   As many people think today, she thought of them as lazy and slovenly.  To her family, that was the worst thing you could possibly become.  As she put a little weight on, she was called fat and put down by the family.  Imagine the people that are supposed to love you the most in this world, turn on you and call you names.   I had a dysfunctional upbringing myself, but I am thankful that my mom was there for me.

Dr. Ellie would gain and lose the weight.  As many of us do, you think the challenge is over once the weight is gone.  Unfortunately, for most of us, that isn’t the case.  After dealing with the weight issues, she didn’t understand there were many more emotional issues that needed to be addressed.  It took her a very long time to learn this, and even today she deals with it, but thankfully she has a good sense of humor.

The story is uplifting, but the words she uses to describe overweight people (and herself), turn me off.  I guess I don’t like the word “fat”, and there is a lot of that in the book.  Some people respond to blatant honesty, I would rather be coddled a little.  I already think negative thoughts in my own head.  There are parts of the book I really enjoyed.  I love that she jokes about challenges in life.  She is inspiring because she has figured out something we all want to know.  I guess I thought it was a different type of book than what it is.  With that being said, I believe she is very courageous by coming out and telling a story that most of us would have kept hidden.  It impressed me how honest she was too.

If you are like me, overweight and a little sensitive, you may not enjoy this, however, if you don’t mind “in your face” truth, then by all means go and get this book.  You will love it.  Hopefully, this book will help those that read it.  We all have skeletons in our closets we need to face.  I certainly have my own.
