How To Manage Your Money During A Crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a new wave of economic uncertainty, and many people found themselves on shaky ground.

Scores of individuals have not yet recovered from the 2008 recession, and now they face further e devastation that may drain their recently restocked emergency funds.

Knowing how to manage your money during a crisis is vital.

While you will still experience hard knocks, you can mitigate the long-term damage. Take the following four steps.

1. Evaluate Your Budget

If you haven’t made a household budget, now is the time. Take advantage of one of these free tools and print out your bank statements. Calculate your income and all expenses, including incidentals like unexpected veterinary bills for the family pet.

Then identify how you can reduce your expenses by eliminating those things that represent want, not need. Must you have your morning cuppa? While you can make a compelling case for needing some joe to bolster WFH productivity, it’s harder to justify a $5 latte.

2. Identify New Ways to Save

Think about the items you use every day. If you go through a mountain of paper towels, can you cut up old T-shirts into rags instead?

If you have kitties whose litter you scoop several times daily, can you save empty potato chip bags instead of buying lunch sacks to put waste in?

You also should take measures to make the assets you have last longer. If your vehicle is overdue for an oil change, tackle it yourself to save dough.

Don’t, however, let it go and end up with a destroyed engine block. Learn how to preserve fresh veggies from your garden by blanching and freezing them so they don’t rot before making soup.

Along those lines, learn to dry and save the seeds so you have a continual supply of the vegetables your family consumes most often.

3. Sell What You Can

Evaluate your assets and identify what you can do without — sell or rent it.

If you have a spare bedroom and are desperate enough to take the health risk, there are scores of people seeking affordable lodging.

Do you have an RV? People are looking to save money on their summer vacations — offer it as an alternative Airbnb. If you haven’t golfed in ages, sell your clubs to cover an unexpected expense.

4. Earn Extra Cash

The job market is, in a word, challenging. Economists like to brag about employment numbers, but when those positions don’t offer wages that cover your monthly expenses, you find yourself caught in an endless cycle of despair and lack.

Only a little more than half of all positions offer health insurance coverage.

If you have a chronic condition that requires ongoing care, you could find yourself continually deciding between needed treatment and rent, with nothing left over to save for the next disaster.

If you can’t find a job that pays a living wage, time becomes your most precious commodity. Seek gigs that require the least in terms of preparation and commute time to maximize your 16 waking hours.

Manage Your Money Wisely to Avoid a Financial Crisis

Surviving an economic downturn takes savvy. During times of crisis, it’s natural to panic. Take these steps to safeguard yourself and weather the storm.
