How to Create a Suitable and Loving Home for a Cat

Introducing a new pet into your family home might seem like a straightforward process. However, there is a lot that you will need to assess before you can bring your furry friend home. Your cat will need to live not only in a loving home but also one that is suitable for them and their needs. You want them to feel safe and welcome in your home. So, if you are going to be adopting a cat or kitten soon, you should take the following points into consideration, so that your home is ready for them.

Buy quality products

Ensuring that your home is fully stocked with all the high-quality pet products that your furry friend will require is vital. A cat needs the necessities, of course, such as a litter tray, a bed, and a bowl for their food, but they also crave enriching activities in the form of toys that provide endless fun. A scratching post can usually offer this fun. Available in a range of styles, colors, and shapes, purchasing a scratching post from mau will mean that your cat has the perfect spot for surveying the room, but also means that their claws aren’t tempted by your furniture. The hand-made cat trees will make the ideal resting spot because of the cushioned surfaces and cozy cat cave. And, unlike other scratching posts, these are made from real branches and will last for years, so your cat will truly have an enriching piece of equipment that they will never tire of.

Pet-proof

Cats are notorious for climbing and jumping up on different pieces of furniture and high shelving, despite peoples’ best efforts to stop them. Cats go where they please, after all. Therefore, it would be a wise idea to pet-proof your home. Go around each room and look at any area that might seem inviting to a cat. If there is a shelf that homes a delicate vase that you adore, moving this to a surface that is lower down or locked out of the way from the cat is recommended. Remember to look at everything through a slightly different perspective, as what you might see as just a piece of décor, a cat might see as a new fun toy. Tassels on the end of blankets are a fine example of this.

It is also vital to ensure that everyone in the household remembers to pick up items that might endanger the new member of the family, such as hair bands and cleaning supplies. Cats will not know that they cannot touch or eat these unfamiliar items, so get everyone in the habit of tidying up after themselves.

Create an area that is just for them

Finally, as a way of showing your cat that this is their home as much as it is yours, it is vital that you create a space that is just for them. If you can, try and put a scratching post near a window. Cats love to perch on a windowsill and watch the world go by. They will be most content having a little corner where they can sleep and rest or clean themselves. As long as space enables them to have a little privacy away from the busy household or other pets, such as a dog, and is safe, the area you create for them could be anywhere in the house. And it doesn’t even have to be that big. Fill this area with fun toys and obstacles, if possible, and their litter tray and your cat will find themselves settling into their new home in no time.
