How to Connect Your Android Phone to Your Mac (Fast!)

Do you want to learn how you can connect your Android phone to a Mac? Do you want to know how to backup Android phones on your Mac?

In the US, consumer loyalty to Android remains higher than iOS devices. Android offers more variety and competitive reliability than Apple. The affordable prices of Android phones make them a practical choice for many consumers too.

Many consumers often have a mix and match of various tech brands. Thus, you won’t find it hard to know that many people have both Apple and Android products in their hands. The challenge is in syncing the two different “species” of tech together.

In this guide, we’ll focus on how to connect your Android phone to your Mac.

1. Use Android File Transfer

Note that your Mac needs to be at least macOS 10.7 or higher to be compatible with the app.

To get started, download Android File Transfer for Mac from Android.com. It will allow you to transfer and browse files from one device to the other. Note that you’ll need to use the USB cable to connect the two devices.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, connect your Android device to your Mac. This will trigger an automatic launch of the app. If it doesn’t, you’ll have to launch it yourself.

When the prompt pops up on your Android device, select Allow. If you must choose a connection type, pick “Transfer media files” or a similar option. Next, shift to your Mac and open a Finder window.

From here, you can start copy-pasting or moving photos, videos, and other files. You can drag and drop a file or a selection of files to make the task easier and faster. You can also choose if you want to place items into the SD card.

In some cases, you may find it difficult to get a stable connection between the two devices. If your Android remains unrecognized by Mac, all you need to do is to disconnect the phone and try again. Note that your Android phone needs to be unlocked before you connect to Mac.

2. Use AirDroid App

If you’ll be connecting your Android phone to your Mac often, you’ll want to download the AirDroid app for Android. This app has one of the fastest ways of connecting your Android and Mac. You only need to install the app on your smartphone and create an AirDroid account.

To create an AirDroid account, you’ll have to go to AirDroid.com on the computer. Afterward, you can sign in and get started on your Android-to-Mac file transfer.

The AirDroid app connects the two devices via Wi-Fi, so make sure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection first. You can access all your phone’s data with AirDroid. You can navigate your phone, send and receive text messages, and receive notifications on the computer.

Did we also mention that you can make phone calls from your Mac through AirDroid? However, you’ll have to pay for premium if you want that feature. If you like to work with multi-screens, you can do it with AirDroid as well.

Also, note that you can use the AirDroid browser’s Find Phone feature to locate a misplaced or missing phone. If you’ve had a stolen phone, you can use AirDroid to wipe all the data on your phone. This helps you keep your privacy safe and protected.

3. Use the SD Card of Your Android Phone

If you want fast file transfers, pick the SD card route. For this option, you need to save your files on the SD card, not in your phone memory. You’ll also need to have an SD adapter or card reader to connect to your Mac.

Save your files on the SD card and then eject it from your phone. Connect the SD card to your Mac computer. From here, you can access your files and move or copy them to your Mac.

You can also do this the other way around. Take an empty SD card and copy files from your Mac. When you’re done, insert the card into the microSD card slot of your Android device.

4. Transfer Files via Google Drive

What if you don’t want to connect a phone with a virus to your Mac? With the recent news on Mac’s security threats, it’s understandable to take extra caution. Yet, if you want to remove a virus from an Android phone manually, you need a way to keep your files safe.

A great way to keep your files intact even as your phone gets wiped is to transfer files via Google Drive. If you have a Google account, you get free 15B of space and unlimited photo storage for your Google Drive. You can save files on the Google Drive app from your phone and download them on your Mac.

If your Mac is the infected device, the process goes vice versa as well. You can upload files on Google Drive when you access it on a web browser. On your phone, you can access those files on the Google Drive app.

Better yet, start saving your files on the Google Drive cloud to keep them accessible on any device. This way, you can save up on memory space on your phone or Mac.
