Ellie’s Back with Her Life Lessons This Time its Swimming

Tis the season. Many of us in warmer climates are already swimming, (we’re actually headed to our swimming hole in just a bit,) and some of us are gearing up for the season. Swimming can be hard for youngsters though. So why not help them transition into the pool (or ocean) with sweet little Ellie?

It’s Hard to Swim

In this next installment of Ellie of the Wienerdog, we join her journey of her first time swimming. When he owners approach her with a life jacket, she gets very scared! She’s a dog, built for running, fetching, and playing. She isn’t a fish made for water. Poor Ellie is afraid of what could lurk beneath the surface. Spooky creatures with glowing eyes and worse yet, sharp teeth! What if a hungry shark is just below? What if she sinks to the bottom and can’t come back up?

These are common fears among children when it comes to swimming. Especially if they’re going swimming in something other than a pool. As I mentioned above, we have a swimming hole right by our house. It’s a nice creek. If we travel about twenty miles from our home there’s an even bigger one. Most of the kids around here have grown up swimming in one or both, and a common fear I have heard is that they can’t always see what’s down there. When we swim at the bigger hole, even us adults can’t reach the bottom, so I can understand why the kids are afraid of what could be down there.

Ellie lets kids know its okay

As kids follow Ellie’s journey, they will see that it’s okay. They will see that swimming is fun, and if a small little wienerdog can do, then they sure can too! All they have to do is try. My son says this is his favorite Ellie book so far! He loves the sing song rhyme and he pores over the pictures. They are so colorful and fun to look at!
