Can Collagen Cause Weight Gain?

The question of whether or not collagen is the cause of weight gain has been debated heavily in the last few years. Collagen is a protein that can be found in our skin cells and connective tissue like cartilage.

So what does this have to do with weight? It could be because it promotes more water retention than fat storage which would make you look heavier.

However, some people claim that it improves their energy levels and metabolism which would make them lose weight.

The truth about collagen may depend on your age, gender, diet, and other factors so its hard to say if it’s good or bad for you!

Collagen is a common subject in the wellness industry these days. Check out JapanTruly on the best Japanese collagen.

It seems everywhere you look people are starting to talk about the benefits of collagen, what kind of collagen proteins are best, and even using collagen to help you lose weight.

However, did you ever wonder if collagen can cause weight gain?

In this article, we will dive into this mystery in order to understand the effects that collagen can have on weight.

Healthy vs Unhealthy Weight Gain

There are many reasons that people gain weight and one of them is eating junk food in fast food restaurants like Pizza Hut, Jollibee, etc.

Some of them are good, healthy reasons, some not so healthy, and others completely beyond their control according to Leslie Chen from Riselean.

Can Collagen Cause Weight Gain

Building Lean Muscle:

Muscle is firmer and denser than fat, therefore it should be no surprise that a muscle weighs more than an equal volume of fat.

Because of this, individuals who are exercising to build leaner muscles and increase overall body tone should not be surprised to find weight gain a possibility.

Increase Bone Density

As we age, the body’s natural production of collagen slows down, which can lead to a decrease in bone density.

It is not uncommon for someone to be five to ten pounds lighter on the scale when there have been no outward physical changes in size due to a loss in bone density.

Collagen protein helps to restore bone density.

Therefore, it is very likely that over time there may be a slight gain in weight.

A dense bone weighs more than a weak bone.

Bone density decreases as we age due to certain hormones decreasing in both men and women.

However, HCG which has been used to treat fertility issues in both sexes can stimulate these hormones.

Don’t buy the fakes though, HCG requires a prescription.

You can “buy real HCG injections online” safely and legally and it will include a doctor’s consultation at no extra charge.

Can Collagen Cause Weight Gain

To Effectively Burn Fat

The first rule of reaching a healthy weight is to exercise, build muscle, in order to boost the body’s metabolism and more effectively burn fat. You can use Nushape Lipo Wrap, which works more effectively for fat burn and increased performance.

However, if you choose to build muscle bulk, then you will show an increase in overall weight.

Instead, choose lighter weights with more repetitions to avoid any undesired weight gain from an increase in muscle size.

Collagen Effects on Weight

Depending on how you use collagen it can have some interesting effects on your weight. Some people may look towards different cannabis strains for weight loss.

As mentioned above, muscle weighs more than fat, so an increase in muscle mass, even with fat loss can cause a numerical increase in total weight while decreasing the body’s fat percentage.

Maintaining a Healthy Weight with Collagen

If collagen is not being used to build muscle, but rather as part of a healthy plan of nutritional balance and exercise, collagen can help some to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Collagen has been shown to work in the digestive system to improve and encourage better nutrient absorption.

A diet rich in protein, including collagen is going to increase the body’s metabolism.

And finally, the additional health benefits associated with collagen help to make the entire body work more efficiently.

The debate over whether or not collagen is the cause of weight gain will continue to rage on in the media. What do you think?

I put on weight after a month of taking half of the recommended dose (2 capsules per day) of marine collagen with hyaluronic acid. Initially I didn’t connect with the tablets and thought it was due to my getting old being 47 at the time, since I had kept the same weight (63kg) from when I had my only child who is now 15. I had my clothes altered to a size up, from 10 to 12 and my tops became tight. As soon as I came across with a blog in a website of a fitness trainer who explained all her clients put on weight at the same time of start taking collagen and once she asked them all to stop taking them, they all went back to their previous weight.

So she found out it was the collagen responsible for them gaining weight since they all lost weight almost immediately, going back to what they were previous to taking the collagen.

So I too stopped taking my collagen supplements and I went back to my size 10 trousers within 2 weeks!

But in her blog she mentions about different types of collagen so I skipped over a year with taking no collagen at all and only three weeks ago I restarted taking another type of collagen this time and see what would happen to me, if this one would be any better and not make me bigger.

It’s done the same as before, I gone up in size within two weeks of taking them, my trousers started getting tight and tight, so I had to bring back my bigger size clothes that I had altered two years ago.

Now my concerns is about taking the collagen supplements or not since there are some benefits in them. For example it had helped alleviate the soreness in one of my knee joints. But is it worthy to carry on taking the collagen at the cost of making me bigger but having the other benefits?

@Eliza, I too put on weight (between 3-5 lbs) using 4 different brands of collagen peptides. It is absolutely mind boggling and the fact that if you research online, you will find an article such as this (which still is not "radical" as our experiences) on the 3rd page of the google search. I'm convinced that the powerful industry is paying for this censorship. They all overwhelmingly state NO to collagen / weight gain relationship. I guess our opinions go against the mainstream agenda. Anyway, because of this weight gain with the collagen peptides (from different sources such as marine, bovine from grassfed beef, pearl, etc.) I stopped and started taking BioSil supplements which is not adding collagen but protecting and generating your natural collagen. To my surprise, it did not make me gain weight. However, I didn't find a huge difference in my skin, hair & nails. But then, I might not have been paying much attention and at least, my hair wasn't shedding... One year later, I stopped BioSil because having covid caused massive hair shedding 3 months after Covid and I panicked and started taking collagen peptides and other supplements. They collectively helped stop the hair shedding. But once again, I gained 3 lbs when my diet and exercise routines have been the same as before. I will probably stop taking the collagen peptides again and go back to taking BioSil. I'm so glad to stumble upon your comment here!

@Eliza, like you at the same age. I have also been taking marine collagen. I have put on so much weight. I really don't want to stop taking it. It's the only thing that makes sense though but I will
