Choosing A Personal Locator Beacon For All Occasions

Most people have bucket lists they wish to fulfil. Going on wildlife adventures, trail-hiking, kayaking, jet-skiing, and fishing trips are some of the activities on that list. If you are one of these people, then you know that the right gear is necessary to complete a trip safe and unscathed.

Choosing A Personal Locator Beacon For All Occasions

However, one thing most adventurers fail to consider is the need for constant communication with the outside world. Mobile phone signals are often weak in the outdoors. So what do you do when you need help? Get a personal locator beacon. It is necessary for any trip, especially if your mobile phone GPS tracker is too far away from clear cell coverage.

You can use one to send emergency messages

A trip can start seamless and hassle-free. But emergencies can happen. So, if you are in the middle of a journey and you seem to be lost, then you need something to alert a rescue team to your location. In this situation, the personal locator beacon (also known as a PLB), which is a beacon used in emergencies if one is in distress comes in handy. Immediately upon purchase, you get quickly and efficiently registered in a satellite-aided tracking database. So, authorities know where to look in case of any emergency.

Aside from the usual GPS, it also employs the use of COSPAS-SARSAT, which is a satellite-based system for search and rescue. The method allows the location of EPIRBs – or emergency position indicating radio beacons – based on the beacon your PLB emits. And the signal your PLB sends out has the means to let rescuers search for you across the borders of any country. So, when you send an SOS, you can be found and aided anywhere in the world.

Avoid subscription fees

Other emergency locators such as satellite messengers can also help find you in case of any predicament. But unlike those who have subscription fees, PLBs are the opposite. There are no yearly subscription fees. So, you can use a PLB any time, whenever you think there is an urgent need to do so.

A PLB is handy and easy to use

When you are out in the wilderness with your family, each member needs to have a way to call for attention in an emergency should they be separated from the group. You can get personal locator beacons for each of your family members because it is mostly portable and easy to use. Some come at a lightweight 140 grams, waterproof, and float in water in case you accidentally drop it in any body of water.

Batteries last for a long time

Most PLBs come with a lithium battery that lasts even up to ten years. The battery is only activated when you flip the switch. It can transmit signals regardless of extraordinarily high or low temperatures. And if you are going on a journey and you feel doubtful of your battery’s lifespan, there is a more natural way to check if it will last until you get home. Newer PLB models now have the option to assess battery life through web browsers via mobile smartphones.

Having a PLB is not a requirement for any outdoor trip that you or your family makes. But ensuring that you possess one gives you the power over any trip. It is wise to have one or two for any expedition. Get them to ensure your well-being as well as the rest of the people on your wildlife adventure.
