8 Ways to Prevent Common Eye Problems

Protecting your eyesight is the most crucial thing you can do to maintain the quality of your life.

There are more than 200 eye conditions, ranging from common problems like dry eye disease, eye-floaters and glaucoma, to much rarer diseases like vernal keratoconjunctivitis and retinoblastoma. Some of these diseases have no symptoms at all and result in the loss of vision before patients even realize what is happening.

Having said that, several modifiable lifestyle factors contribute to blindness and low vision, and ophthalmologists suggest certain lifestyle changes to reduce the risks. Here are some helpful tips to help you avoid vision loss and protect your eyesight.

  • Reduce Alcohol ConsumptionBesides increasing the risk of liver disease, heart disease, and certain cancers, high levels of alcohol consumption can also affect your eye health. Persistent alcohol misuse has been shown to increase the symptoms of DED (Dry eye disease), a condition in which the eyes are not able to produce enough tears, resulting in dry, red and swollen eyes. Not just that! Heavy alcohol consumption is also associated with age-related macular degeneration, a disease in which the cells in the central part of the retina become damaged, affecting the central vision.
  • Protect Eyes from the SunExposure to a high level of ultraviolet light is the leading cause of numerous eye conditions, including cancer and cataracts. That is why most brands of prescription glasses and sunglasses now contain a UV filter.
  • Quit SmokingA study revealed that cigarette smoking is associated with an increased risk of AMD and results in both its occurrence and progression. It showed that current smokers are at an increased risk of developing AMD, in comparison with ex-smokers and non-smokers who are exposed to the effects of passive smoking. Cigarette smoking also has been shown to have an intense relationship with DED, glaucoma, and the formation of cataracts.
  • Eat a healthy and balanced dietVarious researches reveal that the intake of an adequate amount of antioxidants can reduce the risk of cataracts. These antioxidants are best consumed from eating dark green vegetables and plentiful amounts of fruits. Studies also show that people who eat fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids are at a reduced risk of developing macular degeneration.
  • Reduce Screen TimeIn this age of digitization, there has been a rapid increase in computer-related eye symptoms, known as computer vision syndrome (CVS). Symptoms related to CVS are –

    1. Eye-strain
    2. Difficulty focusing
    3. Dry or painful eyes
    4. Other nob-ocular symptoms

    Ophthalmologists suggest people who spend most of their day in front of screens should take a 20-second break after every 20 minutes and focus on an object 20 feet away.
  • Look for Warning Signs related to your VisionIf you start noticing vision impairment, consult an ophthalmologist immediately. Some trouble signs to look for are eye floaters, hazy vision, red eyes, swelling, double vision, frequent flashes of light and difficulty seeing in low light conditions.
