8 Problematic Baby Boomer Beliefs Society Needs to Let Go of Now

Look, we love our Baby Boomers. They’re our parents, grandparents, mentors, and they’ve given us so much wisdom. But let’s be real some of their beliefs just don’t make sense in 2024. Here’s a heart-to-heart about eight outdated ideas that we really need to move past.

1. “If You’re Poor, You’re Just Not Working Hard Enough”

Okay, Boomer, we need to talk about this one. Remember when you could buy a house for what we now spend on a used car? Those days are gone. Most of us are working our tails off just to afford rent while juggling student loans that could buy a small island. The game has changed completely. Your first job probably paid enough to support a family. Our first jobs barely cover our avocado toast (kidding, we can’t afford that either). It’s not about working harder anymore it’s about an entire system that needs updating.

2. “Real Jobs Mean Working 9 to 5 in an Office”

This might blow your mind, but some of the most successful people I know work from their couch, in their pajamas, making more money than traditional office workers. Welcome to the future! The whole concept of work has evolved. Some of us are social media managers, cryptocurrency consultants, or professional YouTuber jobs that sound made up but pay the bills better than many “real” jobs. The office isn’t dead, but it’s not the only game in town anymore.

3. “You’re Always on That Phone”

Here’s the thing: our phones aren’t just phones. They’re our offices, banks, shopping centers, libraries, and social lifelines. When you tell us we’re “always on our phones,” it’s like someone telling you you’re “always using electricity.” Yes, we are, because that’s how the world works now! We’re not addicted to our phones; we’re connected to the modern world. And honestly, who do you think we’re texting half the time? It’s you, asking us how to reset your Facebook password!

4. “Just Get Over It. In My Day, We Didn’t Need Therapy”

Let’s get real about mental health. You know how you go to the doctor for a check-up? Mental health is exactly the same thing. We’re not weaker than previous generations; we’re just finally talking about stuff that’s always been there. Stress, anxiety, and depression aren’t character flaws. They’re health issues that deserve attention. And honestly? Maybe some of those “good old days” weren’t so good because people suffered in silence.

5. “All This Climate Change Stuff Is Just Fear Mongering”

Listen, no one wants this to be true. We’d love to believe everything’s fine! But when scientists worldwide are waving red flags, and we’re seeing weirder weather every year, maybe it’s time to pay attention? We’re not trying to be dramatic we just want a planet that’s livable when we’re your age. And hey, who doesn’t want cleaner air and cheaper energy bills? Taking care of the environment isn’t radical it’s just common sense.

6. “You’re Not Getting Any Younger. When Are You Getting Married?”

Can we please stop acting like being single past 25 is a tragedy? Some of us are building careers, finding ourselves, or just enjoying life solo. Marriage is great if that’s your thing, but it’s not the only path to happiness. And kids? They’re wonderful, but they’re also optional. Your grandkids might come from adoption, or surrogacy, or they might not come at all. And that’s perfectly okay!

7. “Without a College Degree, You’ll Never Make It”

Tell that to all the successful tech entrepreneurs who dropped out of college! Look, education is fantastic, but there are so many paths to success now. Trade schools, coding bootcamps, entrepreneurship some of the richest people in tech never finished college. With student debt through the roof, maybe it’s time to admit that the traditional college route isn’t for everyone. Success is about skills and innovation, not just degrees.

8. “Young People Are Just Lazy”

Really? The generation working multiple jobs to afford basic necessities is lazy? The generation leading climate activism, social justice movements, and technological innovation is lazy? Yeah, some of those kids doing Tik Tok dances are young entrepreneurs in the making. We’re not lazy we just have different priorities. We value work-life balance because we’ve seen what burnout did to our parents. We care about purpose, not just paychecks. And maybe, just maybe, that’s not such a bad thing.

Bridging the Gap

Here’s the truth: We’re not trying to dismiss Boomer wisdom entirely. You’ve lived through incredible changes and have so much to teach us. But the world keeps spinning, and some old beliefs need to retire. Let’s learn from each other instead of judging. After all, we’re all just trying to figure this life thing out.
