5 Things You Should Do as Soon as You Move into Your New Home

Moving into a new home is an exciting time. It can also be a stressful time, of course, because there are so many little details involved. Whether you are buying or renting, moving across town or across the country, there are some things you need to do as soon as you move in, if not before the big day.

Check and/or Replace Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

You should remove the housing of all detectors from the wall or ceiling and check the installation date on the device. If they are past their date or just not working, you should replace them immediately. Replace all the batteries, too.

Check (and Change) Locks on Doors and Windows

Any broken or damaged window locks should be replaced. All entry doors should have their locks replaced for security. New locks guarantee that there aren’t people out there with keys to your house. Locksmiths can also take a look around and offer other security tips while they’re installing your new door locks.

Find Major System Shutoffs

If you haven’t already, you need to find a few important systems. Locate your electrical panel (usually in a basement, garage, or utility room). Next, locate your main water shutoff valve. This will also usually be in the basement and should be near the front of the house. Find your water meter, your electric meter, and all the individual fixture shut-off valves for water, gas, and electricity.

Change the Toilet Seats

This might sound like a random item, but it’s really a sanitary issue that’s often overlooked. It’s an inexpensive way to spruce up your bathroom and make sure your family is starting fresh with a sanitized, clean space.

Invest in Pest Control

Rather than waiting to see what pest problems you have, call a pest control service right away. Put preventive measures in place so that you never have a pest problem, to begin with. Pros will even know what pests are common in your area so that they can help you decide which services you need.
