5 Factors to Consider Before Buying a Litter Box for Your Cat

If you have a cat, the litter box is a great way to make sure that mess stays where it’s supposed to go. However, not all cats take to a litter box. Also, you may not be comfortable with a typical litter box setup. If you’re not sure of what you need for your cat, these five factors are areas to consider.

1. Can your cat get in and out?

If you have a kitten, they may not be able to get into the litter box. Sometimes, the entrance to the litter box is off the ground and small cats or kittens may not be able to use it. Make sure that the sides of the box are low enough for them to enter and exit easily or else they won’t use it.

2. Does your cat have bad aim?

If your cat has bad aim, then you’ll want to choose a litter box that has higher sides. They can also kick litter around and it may end up being a big mess that you have to clean up. You can choose a litter box that has high sides or an enclosed space in general. Also, if you don’t want to have to clean up the litter box at all, then using a self-cleaning litter box such as the Litter Robot is a great way to keep the box clean without you having to do much.

3. Choose a durable material

The best material for a litter box is going to be a heavy and durable plastic. This will be easier to clean and also will hold up well over time. Avoid any litter boxes that are flimsy or made of a material that will break down over time. This will be frustrating to clean and also need to be replaced on a frequent basis.

4. Do you need more than one?

A general rule when it comes to litter boxes is that you need one box for every cat in the house, although having an extra one is a good idea. This means that you should have three litter boxes if you have two cats and so on. The boxes should be placed in areas throughout the house where they are easily accessible. If you don’t have space for enough litter boxes, make sure that you keep them clean and try to have at least two.

5. Is the box located in the right area?

This is a significant consideration like the area of the litter box makes a big difference in your cat using it. You should place the box in the area of the house that is quiet but also easily accessible. Cats can be skittish and they usually won’t go into a box that is in a high trafficked area. The only exception to this is that you may want to put the box near the door if you have a cat that was recently an outdoor cat.

If you use these factors when picking out a litter box and setting it up in your home, you should have an easier time. Most cats learn how to use a litter box well and yours likely will with a little help.
