This one may seem a little obvious, but I don’t think it can be overstated. A futon is better than a couch bed to me simply because of the size. Couches with hide-away beds are usually large, bulky, and very heavy.
I own a futon that sits straight up, can recline, or lay flat. It is dope! It is super lightweight, comfortable, and does not take up much space. It is a great option. Nicer futons are a little pricey, but you can find some really good deals out there.
Storage Ottomans
Ottomans have one of the coolest names among furniture, while also serving the wonderful purpose of allowing people to put their feet up. They can be a little big, so the secret is getting a hollow one.
That sounds kind of strange at first, but storage ottomans are so cool. They still have the great name and function, but add another dimension (literally) by allowing you to store things inside.

I have personally never owned one, but have seen people store blankets, board games, books, and video game consoles in their ottomans. There are varying sizes, so there is surely one to meet your desires.
