Craft Healthier, More Delicious Sandwiches with These Tips

Sandwiches are a go-to meal or snack for many people. They’re easy and convenient, and they’re flexible too. You can put anything you want in them, and you can choose from lots of different types of bread too. They’re also extremely portable because you only have to wrap them up or put them in a container to carry them around. However, just because sandwiches are delicious, it doesn’t mean they’re always healthy. With lunchmeat, mayo, cheese and white bread, you’re not necessarily having the healthiest meal. If you want to make sure your sandwiches are healthier, try these tips.

Use Whole Grain Breads

Some of the white, processed bread that we buy are not good for us. Would you rather have a limp piece of bread made with bleached flour or a slice from a proper, homemade loaf? If your bread doesn’t bounce back when you push a finger into it, you probably don’t want to be eating it. There are so many healthier options, starting with any whole grain products. You can use a loaf, bread rolls, English muffins, or even tortillas. Fresh bread is best, but it can be difficult to buy or make because you have to use it quickly. Try baking some bread rolls and freezing them so they last longer.

Go Easy on the Meat

There’s nothing wrong with some meat in your sandwich, but it isn’t necessary for a delicious snack. There are alternatives if you want a tasty sandwich, but you would rather leave the meat out. You can choose to have tofu or a meat replacement, or use a healthy and filling cheese, like halloumi. However, if you prefer meat in your sandwich, pick a lean protein. Use chicken, turkey or ham to get valuable protein without too much fat. You could also opt for fish instead of meat, such as tuna or salmon.

Use Healthier Condiments

You can’t make a sandwich without mayo or some other condiment. However, some of the products you buy can be full of fat and sugar. Luckily, it is possible to buy healthier condiments you can use instead. For example, food company Hampton Creek makes a mayonnaise with less cholesterol that still tastes great. You can find out more about Hampton Creek on YouTube and find some recipes to follow. If you have a simple product like mayo, you can make lots of other things by adding other products to it. For example, add some harissa paste to your mayo for a spicy sauce.

Pack with Veggies

Whether or not you choose to have meat in your sandwich, you should include some vegetables. There are lots of them that will make a hearty sandwich. Avocado is a favorite for many people because it’s filling and delicious. Use tomatoes, salad leaves, eggplant, and anything you like to create a healthy sandwich. Have your veggies raw or cooked so you can enjoy them how you like them.
