Maple syrup is a sweetener made from the sap of maple trees.

It takes 40 gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of maple syrup, so for hours, the liquid is boiled until it reaches the right concentration.

Once it’s condensed enough, the syrup is filtered to remove impurities and then hot-packed in containers to preserve it.

Maple syrup can be a sweetener or flavoring agent since it’s versatile! It’s often used as a topping for pancakes and waffles or a glaze for baked goods.

You can substitute maple syrup for granulated sugar when making your favorite baked goods or desserts!

Maple syrup can also be an ingredient in drinks like coffee and tea by adding it to hot milk or water before steeping your favorite tea.

Grade A is used for pancakes or waffles, on ice cream, or generally, anywhere syrup would be used.

Lesser grades of maple syrup are not something you will commonly come across. 

These darker, industrial grades are usually used for making candies or desserts, such as toffee or chocolate bars, and in industrial settings.

Sugar maples produce sap during the late winter when temperatures are cold enough at night to stop their sap flow, but warm during the day to cause the sap to flow up and down in the tree.

Foods made from maple

Maple candy is a traditional confection made by further concentrating the syrup until it makes a soft candy crystal state and then is poured into candy molds.

Maple butter is produced by boiling maple syrup to an even higher temperature and then rapidly cooling the syrup and stirring to incorporate air. 

This creates a thick creamy paste that is spreadable like peanut butter.  Don’t let the name “butter” fool you, the only ingredient is 100% pure maple syrup.

Maple butter can be used for cooking or as a spread on bread, muffins, and pancakes.

It’s also delicious served with fresh fruit or ice cream or melted over a burger for a sweetness to the savory flavor.
